3.1.1 Learning about the speaker’s academic background
Firstly, learning about the speaker’s academic background is an important step of thepreparation for background knowledge, especially in a scenario of academic event.
In this project, one of the keynote speakers, Prof. Xiang, tended to cite examples fromhis work and daily life to illustrate his points. Accordingly, his speech frequently touchedupon his academic projects and achievements. From workshop materials and informationon the Internet, the reporter could find out that the speaker was an expert in the semioticfield and a supervisor of Master of Education. On the one hand, the reporter could takeadvantage of CNKI (Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure) to search for essayspublished by Prof. Xiang. Reading through all these essays which present the speaker’sacademic achievement can definitely help the reporter anticipate the content of the keynotespeech and revise the glossary to outline the major focus. On the other hand, the reportercould get in contact with the graduate students of Prof. Xiang to learn about the projectthey were involved in. They could be easily found because they were furthering their studyat Nanjing Normal University where the workshop was held.

Conclusion
The reporter was faced with three aspects of problems. The first problem was lack ofbackground knowledge including unfamiliarity with the speaker’s academic backgroundand unfamiliarity with terminology. The second problem was insufficient capability incoping with unexpected situations in case of loosely structured source text and in case ofthe speaker’s quickening speech. The third problem was inexperienced handling of idiominterpretation.
To address these issues, the reporter worked out corresponding solutions. To beginwith, the reporter should prepare background knowledge from the perspective of both thespeaker’s academic background and terminology. Furthermore, to enhance capability indealing with unexpected situations, the reporter ought to make logical analysis and useconnectives in case of loosely structured source text, and she should also relieve mentalstress and focus on key words in case of the speaker’s quickening speech. Last but not least,the reporter can adopt the Interpretive Theory for idiom interpretation.
