Chapter One Task Description

1.1About the translation project

1.1.1 Background

It is generally accepted that a translator should have relatively comprehensive knowledgein specific fields when materials from these fields are to be translated. The translator hadaccumulated relevant knowledge in the field of open Education before this translation practiceby assisting the professor to manage a MOOC from the backstage of the website. Based onthis experience, eventually, the book Open Education: from OERs to MOOCs was chosen forthe translation task.

It is known that we are in the era of educational globalization and informatization, theOpen Educational Resources Movement which many countries are influenced is an essentialglobal trend of educational development. In 2001, the Massachusetts Institute of Technologyin America launched a project to support open courseware, which is the beginning of theOpen Education Resources Movement. Being mindful of the major advancements intechnologies and significant shifts in education, countries are looking at innovating neweducational paradigms to advance educational opportunities for their citizens. To this end, several national strategies, policies, and action plans for the effective use of ICT in educationare being formulated around the world, with a particular focus on openness, twenty-first century teaching and learning competencies, and smart learning.

1.2 Text selection

Since the previous section gives the general reasons why the translator is interested ineducational technology and finally chose excerpts from Open Education: from OERs toMOOCs as the source text, this section will further introduce the chosen chapters as well asconduct detailed analyzing on their language characteristics. Then equally important is thatthe authors of the chosen chapters are introduced respectively.

1.2.1Analysis of the original text

The source text of the translation project extracted from the first two chapters of OpenEducation: from OERs to MOOCs. The collection is one of the series Lecture Notes inEducational Technology (LNET). For the excerpts, Chapter 1 introduces Stephen Downes’documentation of major shifts that education has witnessed, in which Downes describes thenew educational trends in personal learning, social learning, and MOOCs. These neweducational trends can be summarized from different aspects, drawing from the developmentof open and distributed learning with free share and access for all, to the licensed qualityeducational resources. The second chapter is another paper written by Junfeng Yang and Kinshuk. They discuss and review the policies for Open Education (OE). These OE policiesare mostly formulated as overall policies for OE, part of general educational policies, specificOER policies, and policies for open standards. They also review various existing policiesfrom different countries and regions and provide recommendations for developing nationalOE policies.

The book Open Education: from OERs to MOOCs as well as the chosen Exceptsembraces both features of an academic paper and scientific report
