4.1.1 Misinterpreting
The author places a high value on the preparation of terminologies in this practice,particularly during the pre-interpreting preparation process,but the range is toonarrow and the preparation not deep enough.And,without performing extensiveresearch ahead of time,the author just knew one meaning for some common phrases,ignoring their different meanings in other contexts.As a result,the interpreting outputquality will be lowered,and misinterpreting will occur.
Example 1:
ST:Representings are as such intelligible,and what's represented is,as such,not.
TT:表象是这样可以理解的,而被表象的却不是。In this sentence,the word“representings”in our daily life indicates“表象”,whichis quite familiar to the author.When preparing for interpreting,the author overlookedthe words and phrases the author frequently recite and read,since the author didn'texpect them to exist as terms in the field of philosophy.When“representings”areinterpreted into“表象”during the interpreting process,,which makes the targetlanguage unable to accurately express the meaning of the source text,resulting inmisinterpreting.
Conclusion
The aim of this thesis is to analyze the problems that the characteristics of theacademic lecture caused and figure out the appropriate solutions after analyzing theinterpreting transcript.There are three prominent problems that occurred in this taskon the basis of characteristics of academic lectures,respectively:misinterpreting,logic confusion,and information loss.The causes of these problems,as well as thecharacteristics of the academic lecture,are the multiplicity of terminologies,themultitude of long and difficult sentences,and the high information density.
In order to solve these problems and improve interpreting quality,the authorproposed corresponding strategies.For the misinterpreting of terminologies,interpreters should make fuller preparations for simultaneous interpreting,not just todo some research about the relevant aspects of the speaker.The solutions for the finaltwo problems are restructuring and syntactic linearity,both of which are guided byNewmark's Communicative Translation Theory.
Based on this simultaneous interpreting practice,this paper explores thecharacteristics,problems,and solutions to the interpreting of academic lectures,andthe author has accumulated interpreting experience and been trained.It is hoped thatthis report can be used as a reference for the interpreting practice of academic lecturesin the future.However,there are still many concerns that need to be investigatedfurther,such as the problem of misinterpretation,logic confusion,and informationloss,to name a few.It is believed that this research will provide some useful insightsinto SI study.
