1.1 Background of the Project

Since the translator has a strong interest in the history of European countries and wants to provide an easy way for Chinese people to learn about it, he decides to translate a history book related with countries in Europe. After doing some research on the Internet, he focuses his attention on Ireland, a country that greatly arouses his curiosity with its profound history, rich culture and various traditions. 

Ireland, a Western European country, has enjoyed a long-standing friendship with China and is cooperating closely with China in fields like education, economy, science and technology. The two countries have done a lot of efforts in recent years to promote the bilateral relations in a sustainable way. To learn more about Irish history and culture may help Chinese better understand Ireland and its successful transition from an agricultural economy to a knowledge-based economy with innovation and technology in the 1980s, and may also provide some reference value for China to boost bilateral cooperation in related fields.

With a population of less than 5 million, Ireland is a highly developed capitalist country and one of the fastest growing economies in the world. However, what many people don't know is that, trapped in the farming economy, Ireland was once extremely poor and weak under the British colonization, and after gaining the independence from Britain in the 20th century, the brave and intelligent Irish just spent a short time successfully transforming Ireland into a wealthy developed country.
