摘要:From the above analysis of the present situation, the researcher of the presentstudy thinks that it is necessary to discuss peer feedback in depth, in order that thefindings will help Chinese English teachers implement peer feedback in effectiveways.
Chapter1 Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Since the 1970s, the study on writing, which was an important research aspect,has transferred from assessing students’ compositions to exploring their writingprocess. Meanwhile, the traditional product-teaching method has already beenreplaced by process-teaching method. Based on the interactionist approach, theprocess-teaching stresses that the process of writing is an interactive event bothbetween teachers and students and among students themselves.Process-teaching introduces feedback into writing class which has a certainrevolutionary significance. Not only does feedback help to build up an interactivepattern, but also it is good for forming a relatively perfect cycling learning systemand improving the effect of comments and corrections in writing. Therefore, as anorganic component of process-teaching method, feedback in English writing shouldbe highly emphasized and deeply researched. In view of this, many foreign scholarshave done surveys and researches in terms of the functions of feedback in Englishwriting instruction. Some have proved the effect of teacher feedback. Others haveexplored the significance of peer feedback in second language writing. For instance,it has been found that peer feedback raises students’ awareness of the readers andmakes the strengths and weaknesses of their own writings clear (Berg, 1999; Jacobset al., 1998; Mendonca & Johnson, 1994; Tsui & Ng, 2000; Villamil & Guerrero,1998). And there were also some scholars who compared the writing processes andscores which were influenced by different kinds of feedback. The results showedthat teacher feedback has its shortcomings. For teachers, due to the large number ofstudents, it is quite a heavy workload. And it is almost impossible to correct everyerror. For students, most of them just take a glance at the mark and then put awayinstead of revising carefully.

1.2 Significance and Purpose of the Study
Peer feedback is of great value. A number of researches have emphasized this(e.g., Allison & Ng, 1992; Arndt, 1993; Chaudron, 1984; Keh, 1990; Lockart &Ng,1995; Mittan, 1989). They pointed out that, one beneficial effect of peerfeedback is that in peer feedback activities, students can participate in the correctingprocess in several identities such as learners, readers, estimators and so on. Thus canraise the readers’ consciousness, then they may realize the advantages anddisadvantages of their writing, develop a critical thinking, improve evaluation skills,and finally improve their writing level. The second is that students are activeparticipants, rather than passive recipients in teacher feedback. Students do not haveto harbor an approving attitude. They can doubt, consult, communicate, and discuss.The teacher can also provide help if necessary. The third is that compared with strictand serious languages used in teacher feedback, students in peer feedback tend touse informal languages, so as to make the communication much closer, acceptable,and more likely to stimulate the students’ deep thinking about writing. The fourth isthe comments in peer feedback are more accurate and concrete whereas vague inteacher feedback. The fifth is with fewer mandatory and threatening words, peerfeedback can reduce students’ pressure, lower the degree of anxiety, and enablestudents to write in a relatively relaxed and calm mood.
