摘要:In addition, the correlation between listening and schema theory has been proved in someresearches at home and abroad. In foreign countries, researches of schema connected withlistening comprehension start early and are proved very effective in listening comprehension.

Chapter One Introduction


1.1 Background of the research
The latest investigation made by EF Educational Institution on 1stJanuary, 2012 showsthat English acquisition level of Chinese students ranked the second worst among Asiancountries. This result is unexpected for both the second language learners and teachers. So howto raise their consciousness of language acquisition is worth discussing and researching.Among the four basic skills of language acquisition, listening and speaking are consideredto be the most important skills. What’s more, the importance of listening has been proved byW.M. Rivers and M.S. Temperley. Their empirical data show that humans get 45% ofinformation through listening, 30% through speaking, 16% through reading and 9% throughwriting. And Rivers (1960s) also said that speaking does not constitute communication byitself unless what is being said is comprehended by another person. Thus, listening competenceshould be admitted as one foundation skill of language acquisition and should be paid moreattention.However, the fact shows that listening comprehension is the weakest link of both thelanguage learning and teaching. Most of Chinese students who learn English are more like themachine of memorizing words and grammars and are named as “Dumb English Learners” and“Deaf English Learners” because they have no ability to communicate with others by usingtheir knowledge freely in listening and speaking. In terms of teachers, teaching systematiclistening skills or strategies is always ignored in their listening classes. In this situation, most oflistening processes begin with listening to the materials directly, and then check the students’answers according to the standard answers, and at last listen to the tape-recorder repeatedlywith the script provided on screen. During this process, students almost have no chance tocommunicate their opinions with teachers and classmates but only listen mechanically.Accordingly, it can be predicted that English teaching and learning become worse and worse.

1.2 Questions and purpose of the research
This thesis mainly tries to discuss the methods of using the schema theory in listeningteaching. According to this main idea, the writer put forwards the following four researchquestions:First, whether the schema theory has a positive influence on listening comprehension ornot? If it has, which kind of leaning level students are likely to benefit the most from this newEnglish listening teaching model?Second, whether second language learning students could master the schema and use itfreely in listening process by practicing with the new English listening teaching methods?Third, can the new English listening teaching method guided by the schema theory bemore useful in helping students to improve their listening ability than the traditional Englishteaching method?Fourth, how to apply the schema theory into the concrete teaching practices in order toguide the listening teaching more preferably?

2.1 Schema theory
In present language teaching and learning research, much attention is being paid to theeffect of learners’ background knowledge in English listening acquisition. One importanttheory applied in the research is schema theory.
