摘要:Many scholars have paid a great attention to EFIC, but mostly conducted thestudy from the theoretical perspectives. Therefore, the thesis conducts an empiricalstudy to explore how English majors acquire EFIC, and what difficulties they oftenencounter in their acquisition.

Chapter One Introduction


1.1 Research Rationale
In recent years, English Full Inversion Construction (EFIC for short) has drawngreat concern in the interface of syntax-semantics. In linguistic study, at the same time,it shows tremendous power in facilitating language teaching and acquisition.Influenced by the peculiar cognitive insights into EFIC in current CognitiveLinguistics, the thesis attempts to conduct an empirical study of the acquisition ofEFIC from the perspective of Cognitive Linguistics, which possesses the followingacademic values:First and foremost, the thesis is a tentative study in the field of the acquisition ofEFIC, which is not confined to linguistic construal. Despite the fact that a great dealof attention has been paid to EFIC from the perspectives of rhetoric and differentlinguistic approaches including Transformational Generative Approach (TG approachfor short) , Functional Approach and Cognitive Linguistics, their insights at presentmostly pertain to rhetorical and linguistic scope, leaving a blank for its acquisitionstudy.Second, the thesis propels the empirical study of the acquisition of EFIC.Currently, few literatures can be found about the acquisition of EFIC in China.Among those empirical studies, Li Haifeng (2010) designed a test to examine thepragmatic acquisition model of English inversion so as to find out the relationshipsbetween grammar and pragmatics; the finding is that English inversion can be betteracquired under the context, in which both the acquisition of grammar and pragmaticscan be considered.

1.2 Research Objectives
Many scholars have paid a great attention to EFIC, but mostly conducted thestudy from the theoretical perspectives. Therefore, the thesis conducts an empiricalstudy to explore how English majors acquire EFIC, and what difficulties they oftenencounter in their acquisition. Therefore, the thesis aims to achieve the followinggoals:First, the thesis aims to find out the degree of difficulty in the acquisition of EFICby English majors, which shows students’ acquisition order of EFIC.Second, along with the first goal, the thesis intends to find out the correlationbetween students’ English proficiency and the acquisition of EFIC.Finally, the thesis aims to find out the possible causes for students’ mistakes inusing EFIC.

Chapter Two Literature Review


2.1 Definition and Classification of EFIC
EFIC has been studied as a major focus in the interface of syntax and semantics.There are a lot of researchers who have tried to define EFIC so as to make the studyeasier. However, when reviewed from different literatures, it varies considerably. Forreasons of brevity, the author hereafter only focuses on full inversion, except in caseswhere it is necessary to make the distinction between full inversion and subject-auxiliary inversion. EFIC has been defined in many grammar books. For example, Quirk et al. (1985,p. 1903) give theirs in A Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language:“Inversion is the involvement of the inverted word order which is the consequence ofthe fronting of one element”.
