摘要:Needs analysis refers to the design staffs and teachers investigate and analyze thestudents’ subjective and objective demands in the process of curriculum design andimplementation, so as to determine the contents the students need to learn.

1. Introduction


1.1 The Background of the Study
Firstly, the social development comes up with new demands for the secondaryvocational English teaching. With China having joined the WTO and rapid global economy,the society has put forward the higher requirements to technical in the field of language. Thelevel of English is used as an important indicator to measure a person’s ability. In thissituation, the reputation of the secondary vocational school is closely connected with theEnglish teaching. At present, the students who graduate from the secondary vocational schoolcan not combine language knowledge they have learned with the specific practical applicationwhen they enter into the work. They still do not know how to say and what to do. Theyneither understand the professional English material, nor talk with each other. Therefore,exploring and reforming secondary vocational English teaching has become a top priority,which has very great significance. English teaching must be based on the market and students’needs. It is very necessary for the secondary vocational school to cultivate the students whohave strong expressional ability and strong practical ability.Secondly, there exists a big gap between the goal of vocational English teaching and theactual teaching effect. The orientation of secondary vocational English teaching is to improvethe students’ English ability and humanistic comprehensive quality, and to promote thestudents’ competitive ability in employment, to guide the student to use English as a tool andskills and to communicate in simple oral English and translate the simple English materialthrough the English elementary knowledge and the skill learning, which lay the foundation forthe further English improvement. However, in the actual teaching, students study English inisolated, single way, which makes the students can not use English in a realistic situation.Most Chinese learners who have studied English for several years can not communicate withnative speakers fluently.

1.2 The Significance of the Study
The significance of the study based on the students’ needs analysis in English is asfollows:In recent years, with the development of the society, the requirements to employees’English level are higher than before. The graduates in secondary vocational school canbasically find a job and the employment rate is also very high with their professional skills indifferent kinds of field. However, because of the limited English level, they have to apply forlow position and their work engaged in is simple and mechanical, which leading to theopportunities of promotion and salary increase are relatively small. Therefore, the workstability is not strong for the graduates, which is adverse to the students’ career in the future insecondary vocational school.Needs analysis refers to the design staffs and teachers investigate and analyze thestudents’ subjective and objective demands in the process of curriculum design andimplementation, so as to determine the contents the students need to learn. Because of itsdifferent sources, different backgrounds, different levels, and different methods and so on, thelearners have the different English learning needs and expectations, different cognitive levels,different language skills in the secondary vocational school.
