Chapter One Introduction
English ditransitive construction is one of the basic structures and it involves two objects noun phrases: an indirect object, which is normally animate and positioned first, and a direct object, which is normally concrete. As for the semantic properties, the direct object typically refers to an entity that is affected by the action denoted in the clause. While the indirect object refers to an animate being that is the recipient of the action. The basic sense of ditransitive construction is transferring. Many researches contain the theoretic aspects and few empirical studies about English ditransitive constructions appear. The action of transferring is pervasive in daily life. In most cases, teachers tell the students that the two structures equal to each other in meaning. And they can be replaced by each other in any circumstance. This approach essentially is traditional. And by this method, students are forced to remember it by rote. While the cognitive approach, based on the Cognitive Construction Grammar, explores the way how language is related with human experience, which helps students combine English ditransitive construction with life experience. Therefore, students can have a better understanding of English ditransitive construction.
1.1 Purpose of the study
Grammar comes from the usage of language. By the way of analyzing a large number of linguistic phenomena, summarizing and refining them, the grammar is relatively fixed. The form and meaning of a language have some certain mapping relation. Different grammatical forms must have different semantic values. And there does exist differences between different language forms on semantic and pragmatic levels. The most comprehensive and influential research on the topic of construction is Goldberg(1995). In her two books(1995,2006) discussing construction, she has mentioned the ditransitive construction. Emphasis has been laid on the semantic analysis of the argument in this structure. And she has analyzed the relationship between verbs and construction. Goldberg ( 1995 ) thinks that there are four kinds of relationship between verbs and construction: elaboration; force-dynamic relation; preconditions; co-occurring activity. Golgberg(2006,p.18)believed that the implication of transfer is not an independent fact about the words involved. Rather the implication of transfer comes from the ditransitive construction itself. From then on, English ditransitive construction has attracted great interest by many reseaechers. Most of them only put attention in
