held theory”(Lakoff & Johnson, 1980, p. 153), which showed that metaphors were implicit comparisonsbetween a metaphoric expression and a literal paraphrase, which were grounded onunderlying analogy or similarity (Feng Zhiguo, 2008).

2.2 Metaphoric Competence
In Pollio and Smith’s (1980) paper Metaphoric Competence and Complex HumanProblem Solving, they described metaphoric competence (MC) was the ability to findmetaphoric meanings, to produce metaphors originally, and to interpret metaphors fluently.Later on, Low (1988) tried to define this concept from the perspective of applied linguistics. He claimed that MC referred to “the ability to construct plausible meanings, to differentiatebetween new metaphors, conventional metaphors and idiosyncratic extension of old ones” ( p.130 ). Danesi (1988) first introduced metaphoric competence into the domain of secondlanguage acquisition, and he defined metaphoric competence as the capacity to recognize anduse novel and original metaphors in the course of speaking and writing (1986). JeannetteLittlemore (2001) put forward that MC could be viewed as: (a) ability to find meaning inmetaphor; (b) ability to find more than one possible meaning for a single given metaphor i.e.,fluency of metaphor interpretation; (c) ability to think up one’s own unconventionalmetaphors i.e., originality of metaphor production ; and (d) ability to think up a plausiblemeaning rapidly and under pressure i.e., speed in finding meaning. In China, Yan Shiqing (2001) stated that metaphoric competence was the subjects’ability to construct automatically a systematic and analogical relationship between differentcognitive domains. Wang Yin (2002) regarded MC as the ability to recognize andcomprehend metaphors and the capacity to build cross-domain analogical relations. Likewise,Wang Yin stressed that MC not only meant the ability to comprehend and acquire metaphorsbut also to use metaphors in a creative way. Shen Yugang definet MC as “the ability to createand understand new metaphors in writing and speaking” (2002, p. 16). As for Yuan Fengshi,Xu Baofang & Wang Lifei (2012), it referred to subjects’ cognitive capacity to constructsemantic relations between the objects from two different domains on the ground of their ownphysical experiences.
