1.1 Introduction to the Authors of The Source Test

The source text of this translation practice report is excerpted from the chapter 1 to 3 of Climate Economics, which was jointly written by Michael Roos and Franziska Monika Hoffart. Michael Roos is currently the chair of department of Management and Economics and a professor of macroeconomics in Ruhr University Bochum. Before that, he is a lecturer in economics at University of East Anglia. His research focus on behavioral economics, experimental economics, complexity economics, climate change and economic methodology. Franziska M. Hoffart is currently a research assistant in Ruhr University Bochum. Her research interests are low-carbon transformation, energy policy, climate change economics and economic methodology.

Both authors, although German scholars, write very well in English and they are largely up to the level of writing of the native authors. However, it must be acknowledged that due to writing in a foreign language, the text does contain some uncommon expressions or convoluted logic, which can have some impact on the translation.

1.2 Introduction to Content of the Source Test

Climate Economics is a philosophical critique of the economics of climate change from both an ethical and philosophy of economics perspective. The book, which is divided into seven chapters, provides a complete account of the background to the emergence of climate economics, the current state of development, the problems with mainstream thinking, and the author's vision for the inclusion of a theory of pluralism. The book argues that economists have a social responsibility to carry out more research on how global warming could be stopped and that, ultimately, economic analysis of climate change must be a political economic approach that treats the economy as part of a wider social system. As we can clearly see, this book belongs to the category of social science texts, which contain a lot of terms of climate change and economics.

This report will focus on translation of the first three chapters of the book, which describe the background to the birth of climate economics, the current state of development, and the mainstream theory. The first chapter is the introduction, which focuses on how economic theory can be introduced to address climate change issues. Chapter 2 introduces the importance of climate economics in the study of economics. Chapter 3 introduces the most dominant theory of climate economics in the world today, the DICE model based on neoclassical economics as proposed by Nordhaus. In the course of the discussion, the author also points out many problems with the current research to guide the reader's thinking. 

As a typical social science text, the author has written the source text with great attention to objectivity of language, avoiding as much as possible the use of subjective vocabulary and the use of the first person as the subject. At the same time, the fact that the target audience of this book is actually professional economics researchers has led to the extensive use of terminology and the omission of introductory descriptions of some economics concepts.
