By the end of 2020, 81% of organizations have had at least one application or a portion of their computing infrastructure in the cloud, which is up from 73% in 2018①. China's digital economy includes cloud computing, which is a key focus in the country's 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25). In 2020, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Council of the People's Republic of China gave support to the deployment of cloud computing and other digital technologies in epidemic control, resource scheduling and social management. 2020 Cloud Computing Development White Paper was issued by China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT) on 29 July, 2020. 2020 Cloud Computing Development White Paper is the 6th edition of cloud computing white paper issued by CAICT. This edition, based on the previous ones, focuses on the development of cloud computing industry in 2020, and revolves around the most talked-about topics in cloud computing such as cloud native, SaaS (Software-as-a-Service), distributed cloud, cloud security, etc. It also proposes possible trends of cloud computing in the future. The white paper, including 8 chapters with 28,743 Chinese characters totally, describes the development, technological details, and prospect of cloud computing in China. The translation task, based on this white paper, was carried out since October, 2020. The purpose of the task is to precisely convey the original meaning of the source text for the foreign readers.

1.2 Significance of the Translation Task

Studies on the translation of white paper, publicity-oriented text and popular science text have gained remarkable achievements. For studies on white paper translation, methodologies are corpus-based comparison and linguistic analysis; For studies on publicity-oriented translation, specific translation strategies are put forward based on text features and translation theories; For studies on popular science translation, the differences between sci-tech translation and popular science translation are crystallized. Newmark's communicative translation was first used to examine popular science translation.

However, the previous studies have failed to comprehensively examine the merits and demerits of Newmark's translation theory in publicity-oriented and popular science translation. This makes their translation strategies less reliable to the translation of texts alike. Additionally, the previous studies mainly focus on either text with only one type or on language and culture in translation. In terms of stylistic features, 2020 Cloud Computing Development White Paper is the combination of the characteristics of white paper, publicity-oriented text, and popular science writing. Therefore, the translation methods in the existing studies are less available for guiding the translation of 2020 Cloud Computing Development White Paper.

Chapter 2 Description of Translation Process

2.1 Time Arrangement
