　　Shui Hu Zhuan, as one of the most important literary classics, plays the significantrole in uniting the national spirit, improving the cultural strength, strengthening theforeign exchange and enhancing the international influence of Chinese culture.Nowadays, with the frequent exchanges between Chinese and western cultures, theglamour of Shui Hu Zhuan increases, and it gradually becomes one of the mostimportant sources for people in the world to pursue the human spirit.The spread of Shui Hu Zhuan in foreign countries has lasted for an extremely longtime with various forms. The English translation of Shui Hu Zhuan has become thelargest translation activity among the translation activities of Chinese literary classics.Some translation phenomena in Shui Hu Zhuan,s translation have strong influences notonly on theoretical reference but also on practical application. In addition, thetranslation of Shui Hu Zhuan also plays more and more significant role in cross-culturalcommunication.However, for such an important literary classic, although the research on itstranslation has already obtained some results, it still lacks the research in larger scopeand stronger system. The issues such as ideology and power which may promote orrestrict the cross-cultural communication have not been traced to their origins.Lefevere holds that translation can not happen in vacuum, and every translationactivity will be under the influence of the intrinsic and extrinsic factors, such astranslator's intention, individual knowledge, preference of value, ideology,https://www.51lunwen.org/yywxlw/ poetics andpatronage. Translator's own elements will influence his or her translation activity，andexternal factors such as ideology, poetics and patronage will also play a significant role.The change of ideology and power will lead to the adjustment of translation strategyand approach。To some extent, ideology can be said a much bigger category, and poeticsand patronage are influenced by it. From this point, it can be said that ideology is themajor element that influences the translator's activity. The present thesis focuses on thecomparison of Pearl S. Buck's All Men Are Brothers and Sidney Shapiro's Outlaws ofthe Marsh from the points of language, culture and communication. Besides, theintrinsic and extrinsic factors leading to the differences of their versions will be furtherexplored.

　　Although studies on the translation of the masterpiece Shui Hu Zhuan has lastedfor a long time, and some results have been obtained, existing studies are still not deepand extensive enough. The issues such as ideology and power which may promote orrestrict the cross-cultural communication have not been traced to their origins. Formerstudies often focus on the translation of words and idioms or certain isolated chapter,and analyze them without the consideration of the whole novel. Therefore, there is still alot of room left for further exploration of Shui Hu Zhuan.In addition, with the implementation of Reform and Opening up, Chinese cultureand literature are gradually spread to western countries.
