I. A Brief Introduction of Robinson Crusoe and Old Man and Sea

1.1 Robinson Crusoe 
It was a novel written by the English author Daniel Defoe, published in 1719. It is known as one of the most popular adventure novels in all literature, telling us a story of Robinson Crusoe, an Englishman who is shipwrecked in a lonely tropical island. He built himself a hut, grew his own food, and became self-sufficiency. After 23 years he met with a group of cannibals and rescued one of their prisoners, a young native named Friday. Crusoe and his “man” Friday became close friends; both of them were rescued and returned to England after four years.
 
1.2 The Old Man and Sea 
Hemingway's story began by depicting the interaction between the two primary characters as they prepared their fishing gear for the following day near a Gulf Stream harbor in 1904’s. The opening profile was Santiago, the “old man” in the title, and the character throughout the story. He was a Cuban fisherman, described as being old in every way except his eyes, which “were the same color as the sea and were cheerful and undefeated”. Although Santiago had not caught a fish for eighty-four days, he ignored the jeers and pity of other fishermen, and returned to the sea in his skiff day after day. Santiago's attitude seemed to be that although he was faced with tragedy -- as everyone was sooner or later in life -- he would not cease struggling. Relying on memories of his youth, news of the Great DiMaggio's recovery from injury, and thoughts of the boy, Santiago had the courage to resolutely go on taking pains throughout the story. By struggling against a big marlin for three days and nights, he finally killed it. But several groups of sharks frequently attacked the dead marlin on the way. He did not take the whole of it back at last but just its head, tail and the whole spine.
 
Robinson was an adventurer, who never listened to others advice and always thought about adventure.

Robinson Crusoe, he was born in 1632 in the city of York, England. His father, a German immigrant, married a woman whose name was Robinson，but due to the natural corruption of languages, the family now writes their name "Crusoe." He was the third son; his oldest brother was killed in a war, and the next son simply disappeared.

When Robinson Crusoe first had an urge to go to sea, his father lectured him upon the importance of staying home and being content with his "middle station" in life. His father maintained that the "middle station had the fewest disasters and was not exposed to so many vicissitudes as the higher or lower part of mankind." After his father expressly forbade him to go to sea, and, furthermore, promised to do good things for him if he stayed home, for another whole year, Robinson Crusoe stayed at home, but he constantly thought of adventures upon the high sea. He tried to enlist the aid of his mother, pointing out that he was now eighteen years old and if he did not like the sea, he could work diligently and make up for the time he might lose while at sea. She refused to help him, even though she did report his strong feelings to her husband.
