Influenced by the idea of discourse, context and function in Systematic FunctionalLinguistics (hereafter abbreviated as SFL), Fowler and Kress (1979) proposed CriticalDiscourse Analysis (hereafter abbreviated as CDA). CDA focuses on revealing the closerelation between discourse, power and ideology through the analysis of language feature andits cultural background so as to deconstruct the current social system. Some linguistics holdCDA generally takes a quite critical or negative attitude towards the social facts and the powerfactor becomes the central issue of CDA, thus it shows a terrible world to people.

At the international seminar on CDA in Birmingham in 1999, J.R Martin firstly proposedthe notion of Positive Discourse Analysis (hereafter abbreviated as PDA) serving as acomplementary to CDA, its emergence provides a new perspective on discourse analysis.Different from CDA, PDA “ focuses on community, taking into account how people gettogether and make room for themselves in the world--- through ways that redistribute powerwithout necessarily struggling against it” (Martin 2004), and finally achieves the purpose ofbuilding a relaxed, reconciliatory, coexistent human society.

Multimodal Discourse Analysis (hereafter abbreviated as MDA) concerns about howsemiotic resources such as language, image, sound, action, etc. are integrated as a whole toexpress meaning. The earlier researches on PDA are mainly confined to written texts such asnovels, news, network catchwords etc, seldom is made from the perspectives of multimodality.Therefore, the current study intends to combine the appraisal resources of the visual and textto explain how these different modalities construct the female image Celie in The ColorPurple.

1.2 Research Purpose

The current research aims to make a multimodal positive analysis of The Color Purplebased on the theoretical framework of multimodal positive discourse analysis so as to explorehow the image, language and their interaction in the film construe the changes of the heroine’ssocial status.

By comprehensively examining and analyzing the language and image in The ColorPurple, this thesis attempts to answer the following questions:

(1) How do languages in the film construe the changes of the heroine’s social status?

(2) How do images in the film construe the changes of the heroine’s social status?

(3) How do languages and images complement each other in construing the changes ofthe heroine’s social status?
