For the first issue, there are two representative woks. One of which is “The Chinese Complex of Chinese North-American Writer Sui Sin Far” by Fan Shouyi and the other is “ ‘I Am a Chinese’: Pioneer Chinese American Writer Sui Sin Far” written by Shi Pingping. The article by Fan made a quest into the “Chinese Complex” of Sui Sin Far embodied in her writings, including such themes like the demonization of the Chinese images, the difference between cultural traditions, the complex feeling of the mixed blood and the problem of Chinese children assimilated into the Western mainstream society (Fan Shouyi 74-81). Similarly, Shi Pingping’s article also highly praised Sui Sin Far’s affection towards China. Although somewhat concerned with gender discrimination, the major part of her article is contributed to Sui Sin Far’s expose of the Orientalist discourse as well as her declaration of her half-Chinese identity (Shi Pingping 78-86). Shi’s article implies that only an elimination of the ideology which embodies itself as a kind of prejudice can racial discrimination be finally eliminated. The article of Fan is pioneering, it treads a new road for the research of Sui Sin Far in China while Shi is actually a step further based on the research of Fan, She discussed the issue of racial discrimination from the perspective of Orientalist discourse, which shows that she is more theorized and more concrete while also somewhat more advanced.

Chapter Two The Theory of Cultural Datong

2.1 The Definition of Cultural Datong

The one who actually introduced the word Datong from the sphere of sociology into the sphere of culture is the famous sociologist, anthropologist as well as ethnologist Fei Xiaotong (1910-2005). After having meditated on the problem of cultural conflict for several years, he proposed his own planning for achieving a world of cultural coexistence. Fei Xiaotong’s envisage is summarized in sixteen Chinese characters, which could be translated as “Recognizing the beauty of one’s own and appreciating the beauty of others; accepting the cultures of each other as beauty, and thus stepping into a world of Datong”4 (Fei 17: 549).
