4.1 The Presence of Harmony in the World of Datong

Sui Sin Far passed away in 1914, but the concept of “multiculturalism” emerged not until 1915 before the public. Horace Kallen is the American scholar who first proposed this concept. In contemporary world, multi-culturalism cannot be neglected, since “it describes a central feature of the world in which we live” (Seglow 156). Multi-culture is a kind of rebellion against cultural assimilation. It stresses the difference between different cultures and holds the view that the uniqueness of each culture is worth respecting. In brief, multi-culturalism makes the other becoming the gem (Seglow 165). Charles Taylor in his “The Politics of Recognition” proposes that the recognition from other people plays an important role in the identification of the individual, and that the refusal of acknowledgement is actually a kind of oppression (17). In a word, multiculturalism makes different cultures coexist with equality.

In her short story “The Wisdom of the New”, it seems that Sui Sin Far is advocating a world composed by the pattern of multiculturalism. Nevertheless, multiculturalism also has its shortcomings.
