Conclusion

In an age flooded by cultural assimilation together with the orientalization of the Orient, Sui Sin Far stands up before the public, proudly claiming herself as a Chinese, writing stories which call upon a fragrant future world where different cultures are mixed together while remaining their own standing characteristics. While the writer opposes against total isolation as well as thorough assimilation in “The Wisdom of the New”, Sui Sin Far proposed a Datong vision where different cultures reached a hybrid state so that harmony is kept between each other in “The Americanizing of Pau Tsu”. In the world of Datong, cultures of different nations are not divided into the so-called superiority  and  inferiority.  Sui  Sin  Far  not  only  writes  stories  about  the  Chinese people but also “melted” profound Chinese Culture into it.  

By applying the theory of Cultural Datong by Fei Xiaotong into the works of Sui Sin Far, this thesis not only extended the theoretical dimension of the theory but also provided a Chinese cultural perspective in the analysis of her works. On the one hand, the Cultural Datong of Fei is introduced into the sphere of ethnic literature and new connotations  like  anti-assimilation  and  the  pursuit  of  equality  between  different cultures  are  inserted  into  it.  On  the  other  hand,  while  scholars  have  already  made some researches into the Datong vision of Sui Sin Far, this thesis remains as the first effort to analyze her vision in her short stories by making use of a theory of Datong. 

For  Sui  Sin  Far,  what  contains  inside  the  concept  of  “Harmony  beyond Assimilation”  is  not  an  idealistic  fantasy;  instead,  it  is  the  impetus  for  creating  a brand-new world. The author herself personally pursued the goal. As  a Eurasian, a descendent of “One Family”, she appeals: “I believe that some day a great part of the world will be Eurasian. I cheer myself with the thought that I am but a pionner. A pioneer should glory in suffering” (Sui Sin Far 224). The two stories analyzed in this thesis  ended  with  a  perfect  revelation  of  the  three  words:  “Harmony  beyond Assimilation”.
