1. Ideological Sources of Angela Carter’s Feminine Mysticism

1.1 Religious Consciousness of Feminine Mysticism

Taking irreligious consciousness of feminine mysticism into consideration, three respects will  be  involved  successively.  Firstly,  Carter’s  feminine  mysticism  can  be  traced  back  to religious consciousness of mysticism. William James in depth discusses mysticism in the case of  religion  in  The  Varieties  of  Religious  Experience  which  presents  four  mystical  states  of consciousness of mysticism as transiency, ineffability, noetic quality and passivity (2002: 295), among which transiency, ineffability and noetic quality will be employed to probe into Carter’s feminine mysticism. Transiency of mysticism is referred to mystical states which can only be sustained for a very short time. In this sense, except in very exceptional circumstances, half an hour, one or two hours at most, seems to be the absolute limit beyond which they disappear into the  light  of  day.  Very  often,  when  the  mystical  states  faded  away,  their  quality  can  but defectively be reproduced in memory; nonetheless, it is recognized once they recur; from one recurrence  to  another,  it  is  susceptible  of  constant  development  in  what  is  felt  as  inner importance and richness. Obviously, what transiency highlights is continuous development.

Likewise,  Carter’s  feminine  mysticism  presented  in  her  novels  stresses  the  constant process  of  development  of  gender,  which  explains  the  shared  quality  of  transiency  and becoming-woman. The ineffability of mysticism, as William James concluded, can be clarified as the subject who encounters religious mysticism defies expression and cannot be adequately described in words. There is nobody who can make something clear to another who has never had a very certain feeling, in what the worth it consists. In some sense, such ineffability can be interpreted as transcendence. Carter’s transcendence of female myths is such a presentation of ineffability. Meanwhile, William James described the Noetic Quality of Mysticism as states of perception  into  depths  of  reality  unplumbed  by  the  rambling  intellect.  Illuminations,  or discoveries  as  they  were  called,  were  packed  with  meaning  and  value,  but  they  were  all inarticulate. Furthermore, they typically have a strange sense of authority or influence for after-hours. Such noetic quality can be witnessed in Carter’s remythologizing of female writing.

1.2 Liberating Thought of Feminist Movements

Carter’s feminine mysticism forms in a context that includes social factors such as changes in the obscenity, the effects 论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
