s of diaspora discourse. She holds that due to the unstable notions of home and identity in current diasporic discourse and the constant forces of pull/push that diaspora can impose on identity formation, female immigrants do not necessarily belong to one single identity, but simultaneously inhabit multiple identities. This kind of idea provides us with a way of analysing the complex identity construction issue with the interplay between the pull/push forces, roots and routes of diasporic process.

Chapter Six An Analysis on Females’ Identity Construction in Bone by Fae Myenne Ng

6.1 Introduction

Fae Myenne Ng is a first-generation Chinese American author who is quite famous in Chinese American literature circles for her debut novel Bone (1993). Born and brought up in the Chinatown of San Francisco, she has infused her living experiences into her works which explore the themes of love, loss, and the conflicted sexuality that is sometimes a consequence of border crossings, Chinese immigrants’ diasporic process and mentality, as well as reflecting and illuminate social/political events in Asian American history. Bone (1993) is dedicated to Ng’s great-grandfather, Ah Sam, and Ng claims for several times in interviews that the creation of Bone is for commemorating similar grandfatherly figures-the “old-timers” of San Francisco Chinatown. While in fact, the novel focuses on the life and struggle of three contemporary young women.

英语文学论文怎么写

Bone (1993) tells a grand family epic, chronicling the fictional history of a family of Chinese immigrants inhabiting in San Francisco Chinatown from the 1960’s to the 1990’s. The main characters are three sisters of the Leong family-the narrator Leila, Ona, and Nina, who are struggling to make their ways to peace as persons, women, and Chinese Americans. The central event of the whole story is the sudden death of the second daughter, Ona, who has killed herself by jumping from the thirteenth floor of a building while addicting to drugs, since she has for a long period struggled in the gap between seeking love freedom and parents’ opposition, between traditional Chinese immigrant family and native American family, between free and independent American girl and submissive and well-behaved Chinese conceptional daughter, which imposes unbearable identity crisis on her.
