emeral.” (Hogan, 2011: 114) Instead of seeking some fleeting attachments in this world, dedicating his life to God seems quite reasonable for Ames to possess a permanent one.

“If my grandfather did throw his mantle over me, so to speak, he did it long before I came into this world. The holiness of his life imputed a holiness to mine, or to my vocation, that I have tried to diminish as little as I could. I have tried to be careful of my reputation and also of my character. I have tried to keep the Gospel before me as a standard for my life and my preaching.” (Robinson, 2004: 156)

Under such a high purpose, a life without a happy family seems tolerable. “One great benefit of a religious vocation is that it helps you concentrate. It gives you a good basic sense of what is being asked of you and also what you might as well ignore.” (Robinson, 2004: 9) He has written boxes of sermons which are equivalent to Augustine and Calvin in quantity, and read books out of loneliness for most of his life because of a starving appetite for things of human.

Chapter Three A Promised Land Ruined and Rebuilt

1. Emotion Trigger: Fighting for Abolitionism

The grandfather left Maine for Kansas in the 1830s, and both Ames and his father were born there. When he was not yet sixteen, triggered by the vision of the Lord holding out his arms to him, with which his bones had rankled by the chains and made up his mind to go to Kansas, for the cause of making himself useful to abolition. According to the historical record in Kansas: A Cyclopedia of State History (Blackmar, 1912): in the 16th century, the Spanish conquistadors extended their explorations into the land now known as Kansas, claiming it as part of the Spanish Crown by right of conquest and discovery. Nearly two centuries later, the French visited this mysterious land again through the Mississippi and Missouri rivers. In 1682, it was owned by the French. In 1803, the United States acquired Kansas from France as part of the Louisiana Purchase. Before the Civil War, the east of Kansas became a bloody battlefield, and pioneers launched the Kansas-Missouri Frontier War in an effort to make it a free or slave state. Bleeding Kansas, or the Kansas-Missouri Border War, was a series of violent civil conflicts between the people of Kansas and Missouri after the signing of the Kansas-Nebraska Act in 1854. The border war began seven years before the official start of the Civil War and continued into the war. On May 30, 1854, the Kansas-Nebraska Act was signed, opening the two areas to white settlement, mainly to build a railroad across the vast plains to the Rocky Mountains. The Kansas-Nebraska Act also repealed the Missouri Compromise and reopened the question of extending slavery northward, allowing the two territories to decide the matter. As a result, settlement of the state was stimulated, not so much by westward expansion as by the pro-slave论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
