The characters in polyphonic novels are different from the ones in general fictions. The author and the characters are on equal terms. They are not only objects the author describes, but also subjects who can frankly voice their own opinions. The characters‘ consciousnesses are not restricted to the author‘s frame. They are independent of the author, and what‘s more, they have independent self-consciousnesses. They are neither Zeus‘s slaves nor the author‘s megaphone. They are in fact free men who are created by Prometheus. ―In a human being there is always something that only he himself can reveal, in a free act of self-consciousness and discourse, something that does not submit to an externalizing secondhand definition.‖ (Bakhtin, 1984:58) That‘s to say, the author can‘t give a final judgement on the characters. The characters also vehemently refute other people‘s definitions of their personalities. They can sense unfinalizability in their hearts, and try to disprove all the conclusive comments. The character‘s consciousness is equal to the author‘s consciousness. As long as the characters are in the tense dialogues, their self-consciousnesses continue to develop and grow. So long as a person is alive, the meaning of his life is found in his unfinalizability. He hasn‘t told his ultimate opinion. ―What the author visualizes is precisely the hero's self-consciousness and the inescapable open-ended-ness, the vicious circle of that self-consciousness.‖ (Bakhtin, 1984:51) Thereby their self-consciousnesses live by the characteristics of unfinalizability, unclosedness and the indeterminancy. 

Conclusion

As an American black woman writer, Morrison is fully aware of the racial difference in terms of gender identity, and the gender difference in terms of racial identity. The double marginal identity makes Morrison see more and experience more. She consciously associates her writing with the national liberation struggle, and reveals the survival predicament of the blacks in the American society, especially the living condition of the black women.
