摘要:This thesis is to draw attention to the influence of culture difference between China and America to foreign trade in China. With China's accession to the World Trade Organization, the nation has speeded up the process of opening up to the outside world.

I.Introduction

As early as 2000 years ago, the famous martial philosopher SunZi said, “Know the enemy and know yourself, and you can fight a hundred battles with no danger of defeat.” In recent years, with the fast development of Science and technology, China has become one of the biggest import and export countries in the world, and the world is becoming a global village. We all know that different countries have different cultures, and culture plays a very important role in the companies, especially in the foreign trade. The biggest difference between foreign trade and domestic trade is that foreign trade needs to deal with people form different cultures. People form different cultures, their languages, religions, values, ways of thinking, custom are all different form each other. For this reason, what we should think about is not only goods and services, but also words and actions which have different meanings due to different cultures, because these may let your customer misunderstand. In other words, the trade which works in a specific cultural environment may not adapt in another culture. In foreign trade, Chinese enterprises must pay attention to a variety of environmental and cultural factors, analyze and adapt to these different cultural circumstances.

II. Definitions

2.1 The Definition of Culture

Every country has its own culture. China has a culture which is different from American culture. Long time ago, people have never been able to agree on a simple definition of culture. As early as in 1952, Kroeber and Kluckhohn listed 164 definitions of culture that they found in the anthropology literature. And, of course, many new definitions have appeared since.

Culture is a collective mindset with values, norms, and custom shared by a group of people. It can be transmitted to the next generation. A simple definition offered by Ferraro (1995) well serves our purpose. (SongLi, 2004:25) He defines culture as “everything that people have, think, and do as members of a society.” Geert Hofstede, an expert on management and cross-cultural differences, defined culture as “the collective programming of the mind which distinguishes the members of one human group from another. Culture, in this sense, includes systems of values; and values are among the building blocks of culture.” (Geert, 1984:8) Another definition comes from sociologists Zvi Namenwirth and Robert Weber, who considered culture as “a system of ideas” and argued that these ideas constitute “a design for living”. Here we follow Hofstede, Namenwirth and Weber by viewing culture as a system of values and norms that are shared among a group of people. When they are taken together, they can constitute a design for living and negotiating. By values we define abstract ideas as what a group believes to be good, right, and desirable. Put it differently, “values are shared assumptions about how things ought to be”. (R. Mead, 1994:70)

2.2 The Definition of Culture Difference Between China and America

In the international business, Sino-American businessmen pay close attention to corporate culture, because they have noticed the important functions of the corporate culture on enterprises’ development. In a certain sense, the competition between companies represents the competition between their different corpo论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
