5. Chinese and western ghost culture in folk custom and ghost festivals
Folk custom namely refers to the customs among the people. It also refers to the culture that created by people, enjoyed and handed down by people. Different folk customs breed different ghost cultures. Conversely, ghost culture research provides the theoretical background and empirical references for folk custom study (冯立 32). Generally, the ghost culture in folk custom refers to some rites and superstitions that relate to the ghost, especially the rites in the funeral and some ghost festivals. Ghost festivals also reflect Chinese ghost culture apparently. The Chinese Ghost Festival also called Mid-July Day is a traditional festival inChina. It falls on the 15th of July of the lunar calendar. People believe that on Mid-July Day, the gate of the hell is open and hungry ghosts are released to wander the earth in search of food or take revenge upon life. On that day, people will offer food, burn hell money and incense in front of their house to please the visiting ghosts. At that night, people will burn and release miniature paper boats and lanterns on water, which symbolizes “giving directions to the lost ghosts”
5.1. Chinese and western ghost culture in folk custom
Chinese and western people both hold the opinion that soul live inside people’s body. When we sleep, our soul may leave temporarily; if it leaves for a long time, people will die. The soul can separate from its original since, of course, it can occupy another's body. Many Chinese folks are based on this thought. In the process of the funeral, there is a step to wear clothes for the dead. At this time, the pregnant women is forbidden to be here, worrying about the collision to baby. Ghosts can use their memories and will to control their living body. The man who occupied by the ghost will lose his or her own memories. The ghost will put on his original dress, eat original food and look for the people he wants. The original one is just a shell, who serves as a voice pipe. The legend is immensely popular inChina. This kind of legend is also quite popular in the west. It is said that ghost can reside in the hair so that agonists Samson lost his power after cutting off his hair. And a lot of literary works are based on the idea. For example, Allen Poe’s horror novel Ligeia. This novel tell a story that the hero's ex-wife Ligeia occupied the second wife’s body and made a revenge. Funeral is bound to have the epitome of ghost culture and there is no expectation to western funeral.
