1.1 Research Background研究背景
完形填空测试的设计是由威尔逊·泰勒(1953年),根据格式塔心理学。有人说,当熟悉的对象小姐的某些部分,人们往往把它作为一个整体,并添满缺少的部分。我们知道,人类语言中有很多冗余信息。Cloze test was designed by Wilson Taylor (1953) according to Gestalt psychology. It'ssaid that when some parts of a familiar object miss,people tend to regard it as a whole andadd the missing parts. As we know, there is much redundant information in humanlanguages. In a written text, if some parts with redundant information are missing, peoplestill can understand the main idea of the text, and a good reader even can recover themissing parts. For example, when we see “...shoes here...mine”,https://www.51lunwen.org/ligongwanxing/ we can understand themain idea and can add the missing words “These shoes here are mine". Thus cloze test canmeasure people's reading ability. Furthermore, cloze test is based on overall competenceaccording to Unitary Competence Hypothesis of Oiler (1979). It was used to test readabilityof native speakers when it was created by Taylor, now it is mainly used to measure learner'ssecond language competence.Cloze test has been widely used in various tests in China, for example, in CollegeEnglish Test Band 4 (CET4). CET4 is one of the large-scale tests in China; test-takers areup to more than a billion every time since it was held in September 1987. Separate item MCcloze is a typical test format in CET4, and there is a new cloze, banked cloze,in theReading Comprehension Part of the innovated CET4 (New CET4) since June 2006. Thedesigners of CET4 believe that when the test-takers do the cloze test,they have to take thecontext into consideration and discriminate the provided options; so, the cloze test canmeasure test-takers' integrative language ability.With its convenient operation and facilitating standards, cloze test, especially separateitem MC cloze and banked cloze, are popular and widely applied in foreign languageteaching and testing in China. However, there has not been a consensus about what clozetests measure and what type of cloze is more effective. Several studies (e.g. Cohen, 1980;Bachman, 1985; Hughes, 1989) have found support for the claim that cloze is one of thebest test formats of measuring test-takers' integrative language proficiency; whereas otherstudies (e.g. Alderson, 1983; Markman, 1985) conclude that cloze test can not measurecomprehension beyond the sentence level. Moreover, some linguistics and experts havedifferent opinions about what type of cloze is more effective. Weir (1998) thought thatseparated item MC cloze can have a high validity in measuring test-takers' comprehensionability; Chen Xiaokou (2001) got an opinion from an empirical study that separate item MCcloze was correlated more with vocabulary and grammar rather than comprehension ofcontext. Wei Xiaohong (2004) made a validity study on three types of cloze (separate itemMC cloze, banked cloze and open cloze), and claimed that there were some variations onvalidity constructed by different forms of cloze from the same material.Cloze test has attracted extensive attention and aroused great interest in westerncountries since its birth. However, it is used most widely in China with very few researches(Li Xiaoju, 1997:247).
