The Stress Management Society defines stress as “A situation where demands on a person exceed that person’s resources or ability to cope”.The NHS says stress is the feeling of being under too much mental or emotional pressure. The Health and Safety Executive also explains stress is “The adverse reaction people have to excessive pressures or other types of demand placed on them at work.”In my own words, stress is pressure and it turns into stress when you feel unable to cope. Different situation and different factors can cause stress such as lack of control in your working environment, long working hours, difficult relationships with colleagues, bullying at work or being under pressure to meet deadlines etc. Stress is not an illness and it is a state. However, if stress becomes too excessive and prolonged, mental and physical illness may develop. For example, (OEM, 2002) explains acute responses to stress may be lead to anxiety, aggressive, unmotivated and headaches etc. Therefore, this
essay will focus on the main causes of stress at work and explores some strategies for reducing the impact of stress on individuals and organizations with some examples to avoid these problems occur.
Everyone has different stress triggers. According to (Professor Cary Cooper of the managing workplace stress), he mentioned that a increasing of stress in organization because “the reason of the rapidity of change, people are not able to accommodate the pace of change as much, and they also do not feel in control of that change and do not feel part of the process of the decision making that effects their jobs and so on. Also, people’s outside life has changed. For examples, Working families are now working a longer hours and commuting in long distances, they do not feel they can devote the kind of time to their families and they have divided loyalties between work and family life and that is creating the stress problem”. Therefore, he suggested a new policy of the more flexible working arrangement is allowed people to reduce their stress, either in the public or private sectors. For examples, a company can allows people having a coffee break and spending a half hour with their colleagues talking about a football match, or some other kind of subject in the middle of the day, or maybe a flexible working day to allow people working at home in order to reduce their stress.
