Chapter 1 Introduction引言

This thesis is a contrastive study of English and Chinese conceptual metaphors of“water” under the framework of cognitive linguistics from the perspectives ofembodied philosophy and https://www.51lunwen.org the cognitive cultural model. After a general description, the objectives and the significance of the study as well as the layout of the thesis arebriefly introduced in this chapter.

1.1 Motivation动机
Metaphor has always been a hot topic since two thousand years age. From thetraditional point of view, metaphor is related to poetry and rhetoric. It is regarded asnothing more than a figure of speech or an ornamental device serving rhetoricalpurposes which is not grounded on the level of discourse but the level of words. Thepast half century witnesses the change of metaphor from being a peripheral topic inthe philosophy of art to the status of a major philosophical, linguistic, psychological, and scientific issue related to the theory of cognition. Cognitive linguistics provides abrand new perspective to the study of metaphor. Lakoff and Johnson's pioneeringwork Metaphors We Live by (1980) put forward the theory of conceptual metaphor forthe first time. From then on,metaphor is viewed from the perspective ofcontemporary theory as an essential part of thought, the way we conceptualize theworld, it is also regarded as a means for human beings to develop their language and itis a part of the linguistic system.During the recent decades, unprecedented attention has been paid to the study ofmetaphor by scholars of various fields such as philosophy, linguistics, logics, psychology, cognitive science, human intelligence and so on. It seems that ametaphoric revolution is being launched, leading to the phenomenon of"Metaphormania" in the whole world. Metaphor being paramount is probably one ofthe main characteristics of current linguistic study. As one of the most familiar substances to human beings, water is commonlyknown as the source of life and it is indispensable to all living creatures. It is one ofthe main basic elements forming the natural world and the human beings' physicalbody. It is also clear that any kind of civilization is about water civilization. Thetheory of Five Elements was very popular among the ancient Chinese philosophers.According to them, five basic elements (including metal, wood, water, fire, and earth)are the origins of all living creatures and the physical environment. At the same time, western civilizations are greatly associated with sea. The word" water" is probably oneof the most frequently used words in people's daily life, and numerous metaphoricalexpressions involving “water” (water as the source domain) bearing various meaningsexist in different languages since the concept of “water” has been deeply rooted inpeople's cognitive, thinking and conceptual systems. The conceptualization ofWATER is one of the approaches for human beings to know the world. As a result, theauthor intends to make a systematic study on the conceptual metaphors involving“water” in English and Chinese.
