1. The assignment
Since its inception in 1973, the International Accounting Standards Committee (IASC) has worked towards harmonising accounting standards around the world. This was achieved via the development of accounting standards that could be used as a model on which national accounting standard setters in different countries could base their own accounting standards. In 2001, the IASC was changed to the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) and its mission became one of convergence of accounting standards around the world. This involved the development of a single set of high quality, understandable and enforceable global accounting standards requiring high quality, transparent, and comparable information in financial statements and other financial reporting to help participants in the capital markets around the world and other users of financial reports to make economic decisions. 

YOU ARE REQUIRED to carry out an investigation of and produce a report of about 2,500 words on the works that the IASB/IASC has undertaken to achieve its mission of harmonisation and convergence of accounting standards around the world. Among other things, your report should include:

• 1. An articulate brief history of IASB/IASC and its objectives, including how it sets and enforce its accounting standards.
• 2. The work it has undertaken to-date, as well as the challenges and problems it has faced in working towards its objectives. This section of the report should also include a discussion of (1) the other organisations, regional as well as international bodies supporting the IASB/IASC’s efforts and, (2) IASB’s Comparability project and Conceptual framework, highlighting the key issues for both the project and conceptual framework
• 3. An evaluation of the successes and failures of the IASB/IASC in its work, using appropriate professional and academic literature.

The Output

• A single report of approximately 2,500 words, plus modest appendices. Please note that you will be penalised for exceeding the word limit.

• The Report to be delivered at 26th Feb 2010.

• Individual Contributions: Details of each individual’s contribution towards the project (Use UB numbers as this is blind marking), attendance at meetings, data gathering etc., a diary and an indication of project planning should be included at the front of the report and the group’s decision on how the overall marks are to be split.

Marking Guide

The aim of this assignment is for you to demonstrate your understanding of the role of IASB/IASC in the harmonisation of the global accounting standards and reporting practices. High marks will be earned for a well structured logical report which addresses most of the key works the IASC/IASB has undertaken to achieve its objectives and provide a good evaluation of the success and failure of the IASB/IASC, well supported by appropriate academic and professional literature.
