1.1 McEwan and the Introduction of Atonement

Ian McEwan was born in Aldershot,England in 1948 and writes a lot of works.Hespecializes in painting the inner turmoil and fears of modern people with his delicate,sharpand cold writing,actively exploring the issues of violence,death,love and lust,and good andevil.Atonement focuses on a 13-year-old girl with a powerful imagination,havingmisunderstood Robbie,arbitrarily assumes that the man who raped Lola is Robbie,and makesa mistake that she spends her life atoning.

1.1.1 Introduction to McE wan

Ian McEwan is one of the most influential writers in England today.His father,DavidMcEwan,was a naval officer who led his family to many naval bases before retiring,whereMcEwan spent his childhood with his father in Asia and Africa.Then he was sent back toEngland in 1959 to attend a public boarding school in Suffolk,it is a very void time for himuntil graduating in 1966.From 1967 to 1970,McEwan entered University of Sussex to studyEnglish and French.The school had just been founded in the 1960s with a liberal academicatmosphere,so it is a good chance for Ian McEwan to develop his mind to become a noverlistduring this period.After graduating from University of Sussex in 1970,he went on to studycreative writing at the University of East Anglia.The school was so new that people were stillskeptical about whether the school could have new writers.When he completed more thantwenty short stories in school,which were occasionally published in magazines,and it foundsthe basic to become a writer.McEwan officially began his creative career after graduating,hepublished two short story collections,sixteen novels,one children’s literature,and a series ofplays over the past 46 years.But his early works were dark and thrilling,and withthrill-seeking storylines and deviant characters.

1.2 Literature Review

As McEwan’s representative work,Atonement has also attracted a great deal of attention.There are a lot of studies on Atonement at home and abroad.181 master’s theses,31 doctoraldissertations,and 442 academic journals have been searched on China Knowledge.Thissection will provide a comprehensive review of previous studies of Ian McEwan andAtonement,and what different perspectives critics have interpreted Atonement from.

1.2.1 Studies Abroad

McEwan,as a well-known author,has been extensively studied abroad with a certaindepth and breadth.Among them,Western scholars have paid great attention to Atonement.These studies also belong to high level,mainly from the perspectives of literary criticism,Freudian personality structure theory and narrative.
