vaguelanguage plays an important role in human communication. The author names a few butnot all, as to abroad, Pierce's Vagueness{\9Q2)\ Lakoff's A Study in Meaning Criteriaand the Logic of Fuzzy Concepts{\912)\ Ballmer and Pinkal's ApproachingVagueness{\9%l>)\ Channell '?‘Vague Language“ (2000); A. H. Jucker et al InteractiveAspects of Vagueness in Cortversatior}{2Q03).In China, it was not until 1979 that scholars began to study vague language. Fromthen on, many academic works of vague language have been published. For example,Wu Tieping is the first domestic linguist to show interest in vague language，from 1979to 1993，he published more than 30 essays about vague language. Some other works arelisted as follows: Zhang Qiao's Fuzzy Set Theory Linguistics (1997) and FuzzySemcmtics(l99S\ Li Xiaoming's Fuzzy: the Mystery of Human ‘ Cognition (1987), andWang XinFeng's The Grammar of Fuzzy in English (2001), etc.Many linguists and scholars published a lot of academic works and did lots ofresearches about vague language. In order to explore vague expressions in EBC, theauthor makes a general review about the definitions and features of vague expression aswell as four different perspectives: philosophical aspect, psychological aspect, semanticaspect and pragmatic aspect.

2.2 Theoretical Background
In this section, the author proposes the theoretical framework of the thesis in termsof two pragmatic theories: Verschueren's Adaptation Theory and Sperber & Wilson'sRelevance Theory. Variability, negotiability and adaptability are three hierarchically related keynotions in the process of making linguistic choices and understanding the description oflanguage use.According to Verschueren (2000)，using language must consist of the continuousmaking of linguistic choices, consciously or unconsciously, for language-internal and/orlanguage-external reasons. These choices can be situated at any level of linguistic form: phonetic/phonological, morphological, syntactic, lexical, or semantic. They may rangeover variety-internal options，or they may involve regionally，socially or functionallydistributed types of variation (2000:55). The idea that using language is a continuousmaking of linguistic choices is proposed on the basis that language has such propertiesas variability, negotiability and adaptability.Variability is the property of language which defines the range of possibilities fromwhich choices can be made. This feature of language enables language users to makechoices. The concept of variability may be associated with what is traditionally called“varieties of language". Yet，it is meant to cover the entire range of variable options thatmust be assumed to be accessible to language users for them to be able to make choices.The notion of variability must be taken so seriously that the range of possible choicescannot be seen as anything static or stable. It is not fixed once and for all; rather, it isconstantly changing. (Verschueren, 2000: 59).
