Chapter 1 Introduction


1.1 Status Quo of English Teaching and Learning in PrivateCollege
目前,私立大学,已成为我国高等教育的重要组成部分。此外,它的人口是在中国不断增加。职业教育是民办高等教育中占主导地位。英语作为一门基础学科,是基础教育的民办高校的一种重要组成部分,在中国公立大学中.来自民办高校职业教育的目标就是要培养这样的人具有较高的专业技术水平和应用,英语教学在私人学院应采取的发展学生的语文能力在实践中作为最终目标,突出针对性和实用性的教学内容.在前夕的需求不断增加,具有较高水平的专业技术与应用,民办高等教育在良好的环境的人看到在中国的前景充满希望。同时,社会将提供更多的就业机会,涉外或学生私人学院.英语是进入外国企业作为一种工具,与外国人沟通中发挥更加重要的作用。在我国,民办高校学习者的英语学习的现状是完全违背了上述声明。
At present, private university has become an important component of China‘shigher education. Moreover, its population is ever-increasing in China. Vocationaleducation is dominant in private higher education. English as a basic subject is animportant part of the basic education in private colleges, as in public college in China.Since the goal of vocational education in private college is to cultivate such personswith higher level of professional technique and application, English teaching in privatecollege should take the development of students‘ language proficiency in practice asthe ultimate goal and highlight the pertinence and practicality of teaching contents.With eve- increasing demand for persons with higher level of professional techniqueand application, private higher education in a good environment is seeing the hopefulprospects in China. Meanwhile, society will offer more employment opportunitiesconcerning foreign affairs or for foreign enterprises to students in private college.English play a more important role as a tool for communication with foreigner. In ourcountry, the status quo of learners‘ English learning in private college is entirelycontrary to the above statement. Majority in private colleges have no choice but toenroll in private college after failure in the national college entrance examination. Thus,their English fundamental knowledge is poor while their English level andachievement of English proficiency are also relatively low, which brings manydifficulties, neglect, fear and even psychological confrontation in English learning.Their attitudes towards English learning such as Excessive utility orientation, valuingEnglish examination while neglecting English practical application and communicationmake them neglect real significance of learning English. In many private colleges, dueto teachers‘ outdated teaching ideas and styles, teachers tend to follow crammingteaching model in exam-oriented education of middle school. All above negativefactors directly hinder the improvement of English teaching. The key problem we needto solve is how to eliminate students‘ psychological barriers by effective teachingreforms for developing their full potential and improving their learning motivation and English proficiency.


1.2 Background of the Study
Learning is a lifelong task facing everyone and to acquire the skills of self-directedlearning. As Little (Little 1995:175) point out that  genuinely successful learners havealways been autonomous‘. As anold Chinese saying also goes:  Give a man a fishandhe eats for a day; Teach him how to fishand he eats for a lifetime.‘ Hence, the ultimategoal of education is to enable learners to become independent, autonomous andeffective learners. In the early sixties, West educationalists began to advocate thedeveloping learner autonomy as one of educational goals.
