> A.The Desire for a Legacy:The Breakdown of Godfrey and Molly’sFamily

The reasons for the members of the Cass family regard for money have to beanalyzed in the context of their family’s ethical environment.Unlike Marner’s poorfamily circumstances as a craftsman, the Cass family owns their own house, land, andhorses. They belongs to the landowning class of Raveloe and is therefore one of thewealthy families there. And the Cass family has a long history.Although this is onlyEliot’s simple depiction of the gentry class, the reality is that such a family backgroundof the Cass family is inseparable from the enclosure movement and wars in Britishhistory.

The enclosure movement in British history is one of the most famous landmovements in Europe.“Enclosure”has been shorthand for describing the exchange ofscattered strips of land and common rights for cohesive plots in premodern and modernEngland(Tennyson 199).The enclosure movement accumulated a large amount of landfor the gentry class such as the Cass family. The enclosure movement began in the 15thcentury when, after the dissolution of serfdom, the new bourgeoisie and new aristocracyof England violently drove the peasants off their land, seized their allotments, deprivedthe peasants of their land use and ownership restrictions,or abolished their originalrights to common arable land and livestock, and enclosed the seized land into their ownlarge pastures and farms. This is the enclosure movement in British history.Since thismovement became legalized in the 18th century, then the forcible seizure of farmers’common land by larger-scale violence became more common, and a large number offarmers were forcibly deprived of their land use rights.By the end of the eighteenthcentury and the beginning of the nineteenth century, there was a revival of the enclosuremovement in Britain. This stemmed from the rapid growth of the industry that led to a dramatic increase in urban population and thus the need for more agricultural products. The government legalized enclosure through parliamentary legislation. The landowningaristocracy relied on the state apparatus to force the peasants to obey the enclosure act.The peasants were forced to sell their land because they could not afford the cost ofenclosure or could not maintain their production and livelihood because they lost theright to use the commons(Cheyney 183-184).This enclosure movement made the richricher and the poor poorer. The enclosure movement in England gradually came to anend in 1845.After more than three hundred years of land accumulation, landowningclasses like the Cass family gradually became the land-rich families of the countryside.

B.Illegal Means of Gaining Money:Single Man Dunsey’s Death

Morality is a standard of value judgment of good and evil.In the theory system ofethical literary criticism, morality means goodness, which is opposite to evil andrepresents the positive value orientation of man and society(Nie,Introduction to EthicalLiterary Criticism 247).Dunsey,the second son of the Cass family,is the opposite ofmorality and the embodiment of evil.

Dunsey is the second son of Squire Cass,Godfrey’s brother. He likes to drink, betwith people, and loves to taunt others with ruthless behavior. In Raveloe he isrecognized as a playboy. Thus, the manifestations of free will in Godfrey, such asalcoholism and gambling, make his behavior and thoughts uncontrolled andunrestrained by reason. The brotherhood relat论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
