In addition, small manufacturers should seek out individuals at buyer organization or even organizations where they feel they can develop a relationship, but avoid companies simply bent on profit maximization (Morrissey and Pittaway, 2006). However, small businesses need to be careful in opening up and defending too much on trust because trust can be easily abused by customers (Sako and Helper, 1998) and purchasing professionals may simply dismiss it as irrelevant (Morrissey and Pittaway, 2006). small businesses have a less specialized workforce, it should be relatively easy to create multidisciplinary teams (Thomas and Barton, 2006) and orient them towards integrated continuous improvement (Gunasekaran et al., 2000).

 

Another approach to qualifying the weak understanding position of small businesses would be to develop or work with a consortium of small companies that depend upon similar suppliers (Morrissey and Pittaway, 2006). For example, obtaining health insurance coverage for owners and employees of small businesses can be quite expensive, but the buying power of a consortium could yield significant discounts in individual premiums. Finally, it is possible to qualify some of the inherent risks generated through a weak bargaining position by defending upon small specialized suppliers who in turn can hold some of the risks upstream (Khan and Ghani, 2004). Competitive pressures of the 1980s and 1990s have been felt most strongly in the major industries that are dominated by very large firms. Large U.S. corporations were the first to feel the impact of international competition and suffer its devastating effects. Thus, it is natural that almost all discussions of quality and related issues have focused on large corporations. Small firms seem all but forgotten. This article attempts to attract attention to this neglect and propose a conceptual framework for improving management quality in a small business environment.

 

Conclusion: 


A majority of the studies examined in the review are primarily on based on experiences of the developed world. To generalize these findings, it would be of value to test the viability of modern operational methods in a variety of countries with different cultures and at different levels of development. For example, in the developing world where most small operations are based upon a family structure the interaction of gender roles and lean manufacturing in small scale settings would be interesting. Other forms of generalizability include testing the various suppositions across different types industrial sectors. The literature also points to the relative weak bargaining power that small enterprises have relative to their buyers or suppliers. The internet has been quite effective in democratizing communications, and a study examining the influence of the internet and other distributed technologies in the supplier-buyer power equation in the context of small businesses would certainly be insightful.
