n is used mostfrequently in abstracts which are written by different people and whether there aresome similarities and differences in the choices of thematic progression patterns in thedifferent kinds of abstracts. If the similarities and differences really exist, what are thefactors that caused the similarities and differences. With these questions, I decide tohave a tentative study on thematic progression patterns in English abstracts. I hopethis study can shed some light on the future research about thematic progression indifferent textual types.

Chapter Two Literature Review

This chapter is consisted of three sections. Section 2.1 introduces some majorconcepts which are related with this study. Then Section 2.2 focuses on severalmodels of thematic progression patterns both abroad and at home. Last, Section 2.3discusses the relevant studies on thematic progression patterns abroad and in China.

2.1 The Relevant Concepts
In this section, firstly the concept of “clause” will be explained in detail. Becausein this study, the English abstract is the objective of this study. In the process ofanalysis, an abstract is divided into several clauses, that is to say clause is the basicanalytical unit in this study. So it is quite necessary to make a general interpretation ofthe concept “clause”. Secondly, the concepts of “theme” and “rheme” will beexplained one by one. As has been listed the abstracts in this study will be dividedinto clauses. That is the first step in the analysis. Then the theme and rheme in eachclause will be pointed out, and this is the second step in the process of analysis. So thenecessity of exact explanation is obvious. In the last place of this section, I willintroduce the basic classifications of theme. As the classifications of theme arevarious, and this paper will just show the basic classification.
