1993: 1917). Through it “I” thought of “the miniature of a lady” (Virginia Woolf, 1993: 1917), then “I” thought that might be a “fraud”; after that the habit of “the people who had this house before us” (Virginia Woolf, 1993: 1917) was called to “my” mind. Facing the mark, “I” didn’t know what it was. Because of this, “I” appreciated the mystery of life, uncertainty of human thoughts and ignorance of human. The sentence “how very little control of our possession we have” (Virginia Woolf, 1993: 1917) drew a succession of image: the canisters, cat and rat, the birdcages, the iron hoops, the steel skates…the tail of a racehorse and so on. All of these thoughts, including illusion, imagination and association, came in a continuous stream as a burning kaleidoscope. What caused the character’s thoughts come swarmi
ng is only the mark which brought out the conscious action of the character. However, this mark did not form the main part of the character’s conscious action. After the first appearance, “the mark” was forgotten because of the appearance of free association, internal monologue and irregular conscious actions, and it was replaced by amount of memoirs and hundreds and thousands of conscious actions. What is left to readers is stream-of-consciousness which like the colorful flashing sparks. By this way, the innermost feelings and uncertain thoughts reappeared vividly and meticulously under the author’s pen.
1.2 Image: carrier of the author’s thoughts
Images are applied as the carrier of the author’s thoughts in stream-of-consciousness novel. What’s more, image, which comes into being with the author’s consciousness flowing, points to a certain meaning and is chosen precisely.
We can analyze this view by the appearance of color in the author’s consciousness. In this novel the author used a lot of color words. And most of them are the alternation of cold tones and warm tones. The first paragraph, the author used four “red” consecutively: “yellow light”(usually, readers considered the color of light as red.), “burning coals”, “crimson flag”, “red knights” (Virginia Woolf, 1993: 1916); and there are two “black” appearing after that: “black rock”, “black upon the white wall” (Virginia Woolf, 1993: 1916). “red” and “black” are two extremes of warm tones and cold tones. They appeared successively, and formed tremendous contrast. This means two contrast emotions in the article: stimulation and depression, hope and degradation, open and close, freedom and shackle. All of these are “thoughts that threatens to excite or to pain” (Virginia Woolf, 1993: 1920) as the author said. That’s to say, the two colors’ appearing at the beginning actually lays the tone of the whole article; and the continuous images show the two emotions of the literary image. Judging from this, images in stream-of –consciousness novels are not indulged in flights of fancy. Although they are seemingly joined together preposterously, they show the clear aim of the author’s consciousness.
They are the result of the author’s “attention” and “choice” as the inventor of “stream-of-consciousness” William James’s view
“Consciousness is always interested more in one part of its object than in another, and welcomes and rejects, or chooses, all the while it thinks.” (William James, 1982: 691)
2.Unique structure of stream-of-consciousness novel
Some people think that stream-of -consciousness works is in disorder and readers can't find the veins of its structure, becaus
