e there is no structure in it. People misread the stream-of-consciousness novel mostly because they misunderstand the structure of it. And this is also the important reason why the aesthetic thoughts of stream-of-consciousness novelists haven’t been accepted by the public widely. Actually, stream-of-consciousness novel also has its own mode of structure. But it disintegrates the structure of traditional novel and forms its own structure. In other words, it rebuilds the experience of people in aesthetic form. Stream-of-consciousness novel, breaking traditional pattern which depends on plot and its continual expansion away, is against to be meticulous in falsifying states. Reading The Mark on the Wall carefully, readers can feel the coherence of consciousness obviously. Now, the thesis will analyze the time order and space order in the structure of stream-of-consciousness novel.
2.1 Time
2.1.1 Two kinds of time flowing
In The Mark on the Wall, Virginia Woolf applied two kinds of time flowing: one is skipping flowing, and the other is circulatory flowing. Skipping flowing can also be divided into two kinds: parallel skipping flowing and improving skipping. In parallel skipping flowing, the relationship of states is equal. For example: "the bir
d cages"; "the iron hoops", "the steel skates", "the Queen Anne coal-scuttle", "the bagetelle board", "the hard organ", "jewels"(Virginia Woolf, 1993: 1917) etc., all of these things can be organized at will, no matter which one is put at the first place and which one is put at the last place, because they are in the same period. While in improving skipping, deep or light, high or low, big or small, early or late, etc. is in order. For example: "the mark"- "nail"- "the miniature"- "old-house"- "the people who had this house before us" -"in the train"(Virginia Woolf, 1993: 1917) etc., all of these states, no matter on their form or sense, are written according to their arrangements, and they are not in the same period. These states can't be organized at will. In circulatory flowing, the state is caused by another state before it. For example: "tumulus"- "tombs or camps"- "bones"- "antiquary" (dug up bones)- "clergy" (getting into correspondence with the antiquary)- "eldly wife"(makes journey with wife excusing research)- "plum jam", "study"(wife wish going to make plum jam or clean out the study)- "tombs or camps"(the clergy's hope) (Virginia Woolf, 1993: 1917) etc. We can say that these states appeared aren’t out of the void. Each state comes one after another, and they are closely related by circulatory system. Because the use of these two kinds of time flowing, the deep structure of this novel is well knit, though it seems loosely organized.
2.1.2 Constant change and continuity of time order
Stream-of-consciousness novel breaks the structure of the traditional novel that is written in regular time order. With the change of inner world and flowing of consciousness in stream-of-consciousness novel, the author put past, now and future are transposed, crossed and mutually permeated in the novel, which makes readers' vision, memory and desire mingle and overlap. According to psychological time, Virginia Woolf created an unusual structure to present constant change, alternation and complication of human consciousness. In The Mark on the Wall, the conscious of the character is shown in the free and flowing statement. From "Perhaps it was the middle of January in the present year that I first looked
