Chapter Five Result and Discussion

This chapter, as the core of the thesis, will presents the frequencies of the engagementresources in editorial by analyzing the statistics, and then conduct a detailed analysis ofdialogic contraction resources and dialogic expansion resources.

5.1 Frequencies of Engagement Resources in English Editorials

The corpus collected is processed by the linguistic software called UAM Corpus Tool,which calculates the frequencies the engagement resources according to which engagementresources are analyzed quantitatively. In order to be precise and reliable, two descriptive studyare adopted.Chapter Five Result and DiscussionThis chapter, as the core of the thesis, will presents the frequencies of the engagementresources in editorial by analyzing the statistics, and then conduct a detailed analysis ofdialogic contraction resources and dialogic expansion resources.5.1 Frequencies of Engagement Resources in English EditorialsThe corpus collected is processed by the linguistic software called UAM Corpus Tool,which calculates the frequencies the engagement resources according to which engagementresources are analyzed quantitatively. In order to be precise and reliable, two descriptive studyare adopted.Within the category of Dialogic Contraction, Disclaim (with 528 instances) taking up33.40 percent is nearly four times as much as Proclaim (with 140 instances) taking up 8.86percent in the whole system. As for the subcategory of Disclaim, counter outnumbers deny by6.84 percent, that is 20.12 percent (318 instances) to 13.28 percent (210 instances) in the wholesystem. As for the subcategory of Proclaim, three values together occupy 8.86 percent, amongwhich concur accounts for 0.95 percent with 15 instances, pronounce accounts for 5.38 percentwith 85 instances and endorse accounts for 2.53 percent with 40 instances in the whole system.Within the category of Dialogic Expansion, Entertain is a little bit higher than Attribute.Entertain makes up 29.60 percent with 468 instances and Attribute makes up 28.15 percentwith 445 instances in the whole system.
