Introduction
Malnutrition prevalence and nutrition issues are common problem among the residential aged care facilities (RACFs) population in many countries. As we know, the incidence of obesity is increasing in the UK. Government and researchers have highlighted this issue. But according to National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE, 2006), there is a lack of knowledge among health-care professionals about the assessment and management of under nutrition (Denny, 2007). The same as the UK, in Australia disorders related to over nutrition are now a national health priority. However, limited awareness of existence of malnutrition is prevalent (Banks et al, 2007). I am interested in nutrition of elderly people, in this critical article I chose a research paper about malnutrition prevalence and nutrition issues in residential aged care facilities which provided data and information about the nutritional status and contained the causes of malnutrition. Polit and Hungler have mentioned the common paradigm in health care research is the quantitative approach (Polit and Hungler, 1999). In this study, the researchers used a structured procedure and methods to collect information from eight RACFs in Australia involving measuring tools under controlled conditions, emphasized objectivity through statistical analysis and finally the findings were presented. This paper involved the process of quantitative research, the critical tool is chosen for critiquing quantitative research paper, the critiquing framework is easily to understand and considers each aspect of the research process and methodological approaches. A summary of the issue is provided (see appendix).
