Introduction
A concept “dashboard” was introduced a few years ago, but it was not familiar to the majority. It was utilized by only high-level executives, whereas it is used as measurement tool by various levels of employees at present. As for a business organization, it is necessary for them to get the right information and data within the most valuable time. All employees of the organization should make profits as cost-effectively as possible, so they employ dashboards in their organizations to bring more benefits. This
essay will firstly introduce the definition of dashboard and how it is used in a company briefly. Following this, the influences of dashboard in a business organization will be explored fully. Then, the concluding section will discuss some possible future opportunities of implementing them.
Definition of Dashboard
According to Lee and Chen (1997) and Van den Hoven (1996), digital dashboards are not limited to even managers and they are not definitely interactive. The digital dashboard is a way of making an organization more efficient and the information processing. It is a portal that can make timely information available to the employees. By doing this, the whole employees can check regularly the development and progress of the organization. Digital dashboards seem to be pay more attention on the arrangement of information, whereas less attention on making an analysis of the provided information (Amy, Shutkin, 2008). As for its special traits, it is very unusual and special in regard to presentation media, and because of advanced technology, dashboards might be used on a laptop or mobile phone. Moreover, it is very different from reports. Dashboards should provide all of the information, including the critical one. By contrast, reports focus on more specific points, less comprehensive aspects.
How to Implement Dashboards in a Business Organization
Interestingly, dashboards can make a business organization compared to ant colonies. Ants collaborate and they have a common goal to work in the same workplace. They know what they play what kind of role in their group, so they can achieve the same ultimate goal. Dashboards allow employees to work like ants. Each employee gets a goal, understands what they should do by using a dashboard, and then measures his/her behavior (Eric Bonabeau, 2003). Dashboards are able to make the whole organization balanced. They can make every member in the organization work towards the same targets. There are three different sectors when some examples of dashboards are analyzed, namely, performance based, project based and opportunity based. As far as the performance based is concerned, these dashboards have the implicit purposes to warn employees of the problem going to happen. As for the project based dashboard is mentioned, these dashboards show the information in connection with status. With utilizing them, the form is at the authority of the user, while the content is controlled by the whole responsibility. Compared with the two categories which focus on checking regularly the progress of the business, the opportunity-based dashboard is to direct employees to search for the new chances for improving the development of business.
