It has been six months since I came to America. As an old saying goes, "There are three important things when you in the outside, which is eating, wearing and living.” Just as the sentence says, "eating" is in the first place, eating is really important in everyday life in China. And diet reflects different cultures in some way.

People always become extremely homesick when festivals come, especially on Chinese New Year. On January 22, 2012, it is the New Year's Eve. Although I have come to the country for half year and I have made friends with a lot of people, on the special festival I am still homesick.

"Happy New Year, Jack". My friend Lucy comes to my dormitory surprise.
"The same to you”.
"Jack, there is a big dinner for you. Let's go. And you will have a good time”. Lucy said excitedly.

So I followed her to the dinner. When we came to the room, it is six o’clock. The friends were waiting for me. And they all said "Happy New Year" to me. I was deeply moved at that moment.

Because of the differences between Chinese and Western cultural traditions, Chinese and Western dietary cultures are different. The diet has special status in the Chinese culture. The Chinese diet pays attention to the color of the food, incense, flavor and shape especially on the New Year's Eve. The whole family sits around a round-table which has created a comity atmosphere for a reunion dinner. And the dishes on the table not only are very delicious and tasty but also very pleasing to your senses and many of dishes have beautiful and fancy names. The most important food on the big festival is the dumplings, which stand for the reunion. While in the US, people pay more attention to the nutrition of the food rather than the looks of it. And the cuisine and table manners are quite different from ours in a great extent.

Although there are many dishes on the table and a lot of friends with me, I still missed the site of the Spring festival at home. All the members sited together, shared one feast. People toast each other and share the food. And everybody at the table talks freely and this approach would provide the emotional interaction between individuals.

US, people only talks to the people next to him. And comparing with the Chinese diet, western diet tastes stereotyped, as simple as chewing the candle. There are many meat dishes at the table. The western-style banquet, there will be food and wine, although they are important, they are just ornaments. The core of the banquet is the friendship through the conversation with the people who sitting next to him. So the Chinese banquet is like a group dance while the Western banquet is like men and women dancing.

"Jack, cheers.” Lucy interrupted my memories.
Tableware is simple in Chinese meals. Generally speaking, we do not use much tableware when we have our meal in China. Mainly we have a bowl, dishes, chopsticks and spoons which we do not use very often. While in western meals they use so much tableware with different kinds. I still remember that the first time I was invented to dinner in Lucy's family. I did not know how to use the tableware properly.
