Review of “Changing lives: Teaching English and literature to ESL students”

Abstract: This review is based on the article “Changing lives: Teaching English and 代写留学生论文literature to ESL students” written by Gisela Ernst-Slavit, Monica Moore and Carol Maloney. In the review, the author states the merits and weaknesses of the article through combining the ESL theory with the practical teaching.

Summary of the article
The purpose of the article provides teachers with some background knowledge about the second language learners’ group, theoretical principles of second language learning and strategies that enhance the teaching and learning process for English as a Second Language (ESL) students in secondary classrooms in the United States. The article started with an ESL student’s (Ana’s) statement about her joyous changing feeling of English literature reading. There-out, the authors pointed out that the more challenges to teachers were helping ESL students like Ana to struggle with basic literacy skills in their second language learning. The authors offered the census 2000 data for readers to realize the tremendous ESL students’ portion in the secondary classrooms in the United States. Readers or teachers were suggested to know that acquiring the everyday language differs greatly from acquiring the academic language. The authors especially emphasized that teachers should accept the individuals of ESL students, appreciate the resources ESL students bring, analyze their similar and different needs. Meanwhile the figures were cited to show that there was difference in the perception of language proficiency between teachers and students. After the necessary related knowledge introduction of ESL students, the authors narrated the nine principles of theoretical and pedagogical opinion which were carried out and followed by students in second language learning. In addition one Educational program model for ESL students in the United States was set out in the article. At the end of the article, the authors discussed the stages of language development and cultural adaptation that all second-language learners navigated through. The important linguistic and cultural processes were outlined. Questioning techniques and effective activities for students in various stages within those processes were recommended to teachers. 

Merits of the article
First, the title of the article is suitable. The title gives readers a straightforward impression of what the article refers to is about the teaching to ESL students. Authors included all important sections in the article (i.e. literature review, objectives of the study, principles and concepts analysis, statistical analysis, results and discussion). And authors recommended two important points for readers to think further after their exploration of the field of ESL in this article. Second, the purpose of the article was made clear in the introduction part, and the abstract was specific, representative of the article and in the correct form. Third, literature review clearly established the importance of the study. Authors cited a great deal of data to demonstrate the imminent proportion of ESL students in the secondary schools in the United States. Meanwhile authors mentioned the individual characteristics of ESL students which should be considered indispensably in the teaching process.
