1. 1 Research Background
Interlanguage pragmatics, an interdisciplinary subject combining second languageacquisition and pragmatics, came into being in 1993, symbolized by the publication ofInterlanguage Pramgatics (Kasper & Blum-Kulka, 1993). It has been introduced by Kasper andBlum-Kulka as “the branch of second language research which studies how non-native speakersunderstand and carry out linguistic actions in a target language, and how they acquire L2pragmatic knowledge" (1993: 78). In the interlanguage pragmatics field, the main research topicscenter on the pragmatic understanding of the second language (Carrel，1984, Ervin-Tripp, 1987),the realization of learners' speech acts in L2 (Bergman & Kasper, 1993; Garcia, 1989), pragmaticfailure of the L2 learners (Thomas, 1983) and pragmatic transfer of the native pragmaticknowledge (Yu, 2011), and more recently pragmatic competence development in the secondlanguage (Allami & Naeimi, 2011) etc. Each of the areas is increasingly attracting more attentionamong scholars. The reason for more and more scholars (Canale & Swain, 1980; Bergman &Kasper, 1993) to turn their attention to the interlanguage pragmatic competence is that they cometo realize that the final purpose of a language learning is for the appropriate use of it in givencontexts. It is significant for L2 learners to grasp pragmatic principles which can help them tocomprehend and produce appropriate utterances in given situations. Failing to do so may lead toserious misunderstanding or communication breakdown. Therefore，studies on the interlanguagepragmatic competence are becoming necessary and urgent. Among interlanguage pragmaticcompetence research, speech act is an inevitable research tool and many speech acts have indeedbeen noticed and researched by many scholars. However, disagreement did not get enoughattention in interlanguage pragmatics studies, though as a commonly used speech act in dailyconversations. It is now arousing more interest among linguists, which can be seen from thespecial issue on "disagreement" published in Journal of Pragmatics (2012, Issue 12).
