Conclusion

This thesis has introduced the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis of linguistic relativity, identified thefeatures of linguistic sexism, including the sexism against females and also the anti-male biasin English，traced the social and cultural reasons for sexism and proposed some strategies toeliminate the sexism in English. Now, the thesis draws out some of the main points of thisstudy.
Firstly, the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis of linguistic relativity is quite powerful in accountingfor the phenomena of sexism in English. The relationship between language and gender as wellas language and society is always the hot topic in sociolinguistics[6]. According to Sapir-WhorfHypothesis of linguistic reality，language structures and uses are influenced and inspired bynon-linguistic reality, including social structures and organizations. That is to say, the way inwhich languages are used and structured has been influenced by the institutions, socialstructures and ideologies of the communities and societies.
Secondly，this thesis discusses the features of linguistic sexism and analyzes themanifestation of sexism against females in English. Linguists pay more attention to the genderdiscrimination against females and this thesis studies the manifestation of this phenomenonfrom the perspective of vocabulary, semantics and language use. Then, the thesis proves theexistence of the anti-male bias in English. This phenomenon of bias against males also exists inEnglish, which is not as eye-catching as the gender discrimination against females in English.The linguists did not pay much attention to this phenomenon. Some of them took it for grantedthat males play the dominating role in language and females are subordinate of males, ignoringthe existence of anti-male bias in English. This thesis proves the existence of this phenomenonand analyzes its manifestation in language in details from the perspective of vocabulary andsemantics.
