With theincreasing development of human civilization and the expansion of the interpersonalrelationship, euphemism plays an indispensable role in our daily communication.Without euphemism, people especially those who come from different cultural may feelconfused or embarrassed in their process of communication. What’s even worse is thatthe atmosphere between them would be very tense. So it has been arousing the interest ofthe scholars both at home and abroad for a long time.The study of the euphemisms can be traced to 1580s. It was George Blunt(1580s),a British writer who first used the word “euphemism” and defined it as “Euphemism is agood or favorable interpretation of a bad word”. And then many scholars such as Menken,Bolinger, Neaman and Sliver have studied euphemism successively. Among them,Menken (1936) discussed extensively about how the euphemism generated and becomepopular in his book The American Language. James George Frazer(1991), a Britishscholar was one of the people who first studied euphemism systematically. In his book Agolden Bough—A Study in Magic and Religion, Frazer devoted a special chapter to studythe taboos, the behavior, the things and the name. In 1981, the British linguist HughRawson compiled a dictionary called A Dictionary of Euphemism and Other Double talk.It collected the achievements of euphemisms study done by both British and Americanlinguists. Shu Ding fang, a very famous Chinese scholar speaks highly of this work. In1983, American scholars Neaman and Sliver published a dictionary called Kindwords—A Treasure of Euphemisms which described the origin, the history, thedevelopment and the changing of the euphemism in details.
Compared with the western scholars the Chinese scholars began to carry out asystematic study on euphemism at the contemporary era. Many of them have studied theeuphemism from the perspective of rhetoric for a long history. Today when we refer tothe figures of speech, euphemism is of course belongs to them, for it is an indispensableelement of linguistic phenomenon.Chinese scholar Fan Jiacai(1992) was the first person who described theeuphemisms clearly in his book Appreciation and Analysis of English Rhetoric. In hisbook, the author collected the achievement of the study of euphemisms. Meanwhile, hediscussed the following problems such as how the euphemism generated, what thefeatures of euphemisms are, and how the euphemisms are formed. The other tworepresentatives of euphemisms studying from a rhetoric view are Pan Shaozhang and LiXinhua.
