Chapter One Introduction

1.1 Origin of the Research
本研究的起源来自三个方面:听力和口语,培训的必要性,非英语专业的听力和口语技能的重要性,词汇束提高英语听力和口语能力的积极作用。一个简短的讨论将在这三个方面,如下。The origin of the present study comes from three aspects: the importance of listeningand speaking, the necessity of training non-English major’s listening and speaking skills,and the positive functions of lexical bundles on improving English listening and speakingskills. A brief discussion will be made about these three aspects as follows.


1.1.1 The Importance of Listening and Speaking

The first skill children learnwhen they begin to communicate is listening. According to Feyten (1991), of the total timepeople spend on communication, 45% is on listening, 30% on speaking, 16% on reading,and 9% on writing. Oral skills, both speaking and listening, are at the very foundation ofliteracy and play an important role in language study. Listening is a critically importantskill for both learners who want or need to participate in oral interpersonal communicationand for learners who want or need to receive information from such oral sources as lecturesand media broadcasts and so on. It is thus clear that listening is a crucial skill in thelanguage acquisition process where the development of such skill will lead to moreproductive results in other areas of language learning.It is generally acknowledged that listening is not just a separate skill from speaking,but lays a foundation for speaking. Learning how to listen helps learners with thedevelopment of other learning skills as well as listening skills. Support can be found for theimportance of listening from Krashen (1981:34), who regards the role of listening as a toolfor understanding and thinks that listening is a key factor in facilitating language learning.Rost (2005) also points out that listening is vital in the language classroom becauseeffective teaching of listening can provide sufficient language input for students to imitateand practice. In short, the importance of listening can’t be overstated.
Speaking is at least as important as listening, if not more. Without speaking, there will be no listening. In a word, speaking and listening are just like the two sides of the samecoin, and can not be separated from each other. Speaking allows people to converse withother speakers of the same language from all over the world. With well-defined oralcommunication skills, a person can communicate effectively, therefore he will possessgreater chance for success in career and sociality. On the other hand, people who lackeffective oral communication skills or conversational English skills will undoubtedly sufferfrustration on many important occasions. In short, speaking is an important productiveactivity undertaken by people as a vehicle for everyday communication, so it’s of greatimportance to find a proper way to improve one’s speaking skills.
