Chapter One Introduction


1.1 Background
在很多场合,在国外语言学界的专家和学者相信有英语专业学生批判性思维能力(如赫七鑫1999英语教育团队2001年)的不足之处。同时,英语专业的学生之间的批判性思维能力培养的必要性已经得到了广泛的认可,越来越多的学者所呼吁(赫七心1999;文秋芳2008;黄渊深2010)。目前的“英语专业教学大纲”强调思维能力的重要性,并强调教育的目的,以提高学生的思维能力和创新能力:在专业课程中,教师应注意培养学生的分析能力,综合和归纳,发现问题和解决问题的能力。语言技能训练和创新能力的培养,应该是平衡的教学(英语专业教学大纲的制定组2000)。“国中/长短期教育的改革与发展计划”(2010年)发行的,最近也有两个方面提出的想法与思想相关联的学习培训。在需要创新的时代,外语教学不仅是的主题语言生活,但更多的是培养学生的思维能力和培养他们的创造精神主题。更更重要的是到国外语言教学实践中采用适当的教学原则,高度重视对学生的批判性思维能力(2010年袁平话)。On many occasions, experts and scholars in foreign languages Educational circles believethere is deficiency in English majors' critical thinking ability (e.g. He Qixin 1999; Englisheducational team 2001). Meanwhile, the necessity of cultivating critical thinking abilityamong English majors has been widely recognized and appealed by more and more scholars(He Qixin 1999; Wen Qiufang 2008; Huang Yuanshen 2010). The current “Syllabus forEnglish Majors” has emphasized the importance of thinking ability and has highlighted theaim of education to enhance students' thinking ability and innovation ability: In theprofessional courses, teachers should be aware of training students' ability of analysis,synthesis and generalizing, and their capacity of finding problems and solving problems.Language skills training and innovation ability cultivating should be balanced in teaching(English major syllabus formulation group 2000). The “National Middle/Long TermEducation Reform and Development Plans of China” (2010) issued lately has also putforward the idea of associating learning with thoughts training.In an era which calls for innovation, foreign language teaching is not only a subject oflanguage, but more a subject of training students' thinking ability and cultivating theircreational spirits. It is more and more important to employ a proper pedagogic principle intoforeign language teaching practice, and to attach great importance on students' criticalthinking ability (Yuan Pinghua 2010).


1.1.2 A School-based Research
Northwest Agriculture and Forestry University is a comprehensive and nationalkey university under the direct administration of the Ministry of Education in China. Her planfor the second stage of National Key Subject Program from the year 2011 aims to createa high level research university by combining production, teaching with research (2008). As isknown to all that a research university must cultivate higher research talents, and the highertalents should possess critical thinking ability and innovation ability. For undergraduateeducation, the university has been approved as one of the experimental colleges for collegestudents' innovation project by the Ministry of Education, investing 1 million Yuan each yearfor the innovation project.An active participation in innovative activities not only helps students deepen their comprehension and grasp of subject matter knowledge, but put positive impacts on theirideology, moral quality and will power as well. By participating in innovativeprojects, students would be able to realize their dreams of becoming creators of social wealthgradually. However, during the period of conducting researches with my supervisor, we foundthat for two consecutive years (2008 and 2009), there haven't any innovative projects beingapplied by students majoring in English.
