a. Symbolic interactionism : GH.Mead
The theory is based on the earlier phycologist W.James's "social self "theory andthe writer Charles Horton Colley's "self in mirror" theory. They maintain that theidentity is a single and stable nature. Compared with earlier researchers , Mead raisesthat identity is a social product and developing process .In the process , the individualhas negotiated with social culture by symbol since one came to birth. Meaddistinguished two selfs : " I" and "me"。 The former is the individual's response toother's attitude while the latter refers to the self-reflection to other's attitude (theother's attitude to oneself) . The mutual interaction and influence between "I" and "me" forms a unified social self.
b. Dramaturgical theory
The theory , mentioned by US sociologist Erving Goffman , develops from thesymbolic interaction theory. The theory deems that daily communication is interactiveperformance in the social stage where human beings play different roles. In theperformance influenced by environment and audiences , the performer needs to givethe correspondent impression to the others ,which reaches the communication goal ; itis not sufficient to be a certain type of person that one possesses the demandedcharacteristics , and one must own the behaviour norm belonging to the community .Goffinan maintains that people communicate by sending out some signals consciouslyor subconsciously . The signals provide the information that who we are and theexpectation of other's treatment to us ; meanwhile , we try to control other's behaviorsin terms of private benefits.The common points of Mead's theory and Goffman'stheory lie in that identity is constructed by social communication . However , theGoffman's theory neglects the agency of symbolic interaction theory .
