Chapter 1 Introduction

1.1 Background of the Research

The major nationality is the Han whichconstitutes approximately 90.6% of the total population. The other 55 non-Han Chinesenationalities are officially recognized as ethnic minorities. The combined population of ethnicminorities are numbered at 123.33 million, among which are the Zhuang at 16.18million, theManchu at 10.68 million, the Hui at 9.82 million, the Miao at 8.94 million, the Uyghur at 8.4million, the Mongolian at 5.8 million. The Mongolian ethnic group is legendary with a longhistory. For thousands of years, Mongolians have enjoyed the nomadic way of life, living ingrasslands and participating in seasonal migration. Mongolian herdsmen have left theirfootprints on most of China’s grasslands and therefore they are known as the “prairie pride”.The majority of Mongolians now inhabit the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region which islocated in the northern part of China. Other groupings of Mongolians are found in threeprovinces in the Northeast of China which include Heilongjiang, Jilin, and Liaoning provinces. Mongolians living in Heilongjiang are different from those who live in the Inner MongoliaAutonomous Region. Inner Mongolia has a total population of 23.92 million, of which 4.23million are Mongolians. Heilongjiang has a population of 38.17 million, of which 0.17million are Mongolians. Due to the small population of Mongolians in Heilongjiang, theyhave more opportunity to communicate with Han and are therefore influenced by Han in bothbehavior and language. Most of Mongolians that are bilingual live in the Dorbet AutonomousCounty.
