1.1 Research background

And they devoted to EI research in education. They conduct research intothe students’ EI and its impact on their behaviors, but there is little research on teachers’behaviors and achievements, especially in the EFL (English Foreign Language) classroomteaching context. As educators, the information conveyed is both cognitive and emotional intheir roles as teachers, models and mentors” (Mayer & Cobb, 2000, P166). In this process, thestudents’ mental abilities such as perception, sensation, memory, thought and imagination areinfluenced by teachers’ emotions. Only the teacher possess such good quality as kindness andpatience can they inspire their students emotionally to study enthusiastically. Emotionfacilitates thought. Positive emotion is beneficial to the development of intelligence. Thepositive one can fire the students’ enthusiasm, stimulate their learning interest, and enrichtheir emotional experience. The teacher is supposed to possess the ability to manage emotionsin the classroom. All of the students need an environment where they feel safe and relaxed. Acaring and thoughtful teacher can put herself in the students’ shoes and try to meet theiremotional needs. Thus they establish a harmonious relationship and improve the wholeclassroom teaching effectiveness.

In junior school, the students are characteristic of being rebellious, stressful,independent from parents and suffering from emotional problems while they are in the special transition from children to adolescent. In English classroom teaching, the English teachers’emotional intelligence has a key impact on them. Besides, Teacher’s EQ plays a key role ofteaching practice and facilitates to reach the whole-person development which is in line withthe humanistic thought. What’s more, the English teachers in junior school have an obligationand responsibility to behave properly as the faculty leaders, colleagues, students expected.Taking EI into the teaching profession, teachers would reap the benefit from practicing andpromoting these skills. The teachers with high levels of emotional intelligence can changetheir positive feelings and thinking into active actions or behaviors. Hence, students can reapthe benefits from the quality of instruction which includes intellectual knowledge andemotional interaction.
