1Chapter 1 Introduction

On thebasis of interlanguage pragmatic studies, it aims to identify how Chinese English majorsexpress epistemic modality in the use of epistemic devices and how this competencedevelops over time with Reference to the native speaker data, with regard to proficiencyvariations among learners and possible factors affecting pragmatic development. Inaddition, the study offers suggestions for the second/foreign language instructionalintervention and identifies areas for future research. This chapter presents an overview ofthe study: the rationale for the study, the research purpose and the outline of thedissertation.


1.1Rationale for the studyInter

Nonetheless, it is very common to find that research ever done withinthis field largely addresses just the “use” part of this definition, neglecting the acquisitionalcomponent of this concept.ILP has developed two strands of research: comparative-sociolinguistic andacquisitional. In ILP research, the comparative and sociolinguistic studies dominate thefield. Comparative studies have resulted in a significant body of research in four main areas:(1) development and refinement of elicitation tasks, (2) description of first language (L1)speech acts, (3) description of L2 speech acts (especially by advanced non-native speakers(NNSs)), and (4) the comparison of L1 and L2 production by native and nonnative speakers(Bardivi-Harlig, 2002: 184). The comparisons serve a number of functions: as primaryresearch into L2 pragmatics, as a type of pragmatic error analysis, as a needs Assessmentfor the development of pedagogical methods and materials for teaching pragmatics, and amodel for pedagogical materials. They may also serve to define research areas foracquisitional ILP studies. This type of research, even without directly examining thedevelopment of pragmatic competence, has encouraged the generation of hypotheses aboutthe acquisition of pragmatic knowledge, which can later on be tested in developmenta studies.Recently, however, ILP has been influenced by developments in the field of secondlanguage acquisition (SLA) and second language pedagogy. In SLA, there is a growingrecognition of the importance of pragmatic competence within overall languagecompetence, and this has led to a heightened interest in how pragmatic knowledge isacquired and develops in second and foreign language learners.
